Formal Training

8.0 / 10

(based on 10 ratings in 2019)

2019

"It's very limited but I don't think it has hindered my progression as a lawyer."
Second year trainee, London
"Most training is 'on the job', which is the best way of learning. In addition to legal skills, client contact enables you to learn how to deal with clients directly and a high level of responsibility means that trainees are operating at an associate level."
First year trainee, London
"There's lots of departmental training and lots of training courses specifically for trainees. You are helped to develop an array of legal skills as well as commercial, IT and organisational skills."
First year trainee, London
"Our training has been well-rounded and covered all aspects of the business. We have been given plenty of training and are well supported across the firm."
First year trainee, London
"Training programmes, other than the mandatory professional skills course, are organised by department. IT training is also readily available. The training is less frequent and structured than one may expect with an average of one or two training sessions per month."
First year trainee, London
"It depends on the team. Some teams take a more structured approach to training, while others are more ad hoc."
Second year trainee, London, UK

2018

"There are very detailed training programmes for each department."
First year trainee,
"There's high-quality training but not too much of it as most things are learned on the job. This method is far more efficient and exciting than being lectured to."
First year trainee,
"There's usually great training on the practice area that you are sitting in."
First year trainee,

"Ad hoc training (learn on the job) mixed with the usual formal training (legal, commercial, soft skills etc). Different teams have different training programmes and these can be variable."
Second year trainee, London
"Satisfactory in some departments and excellent in others. Overall good."
Second year trainee, London
"Very much depends upon the department. Trainees all complete the professional skills course but some departments have much better junior lawyer training than others (tends to be the transactional teams)."
Second year trainee, London
"The training is excellent at the firm, both internal and external, with department specific sessions as well as more general skills-based sessions such as those on negotiation and advanced written communication."
Second year trainee, London
"Weil has a comprehensive formal training programme for its trainees. This includes departmental, but also more general, training."
First year trainee, London

2015

"Training does depend on the department, but you can go through your training contract with no formal training at all."
First year trainee, London
"Despite the quality of internal training programmes varying by department, these training programmes are good overall."
Second year trainee, London
"In my opinion this is (largely) a learning by doing profession, but the firm do run training sessions every few months on topical areas of law. Skills are quickly picked up and maintained while on the job itself: for instance, you pick up management, social and analytical skills on any deal and by repeating the process they are ingrained further."
Second year trainee, London
"The training at the firm is exceptional. Colleagues at all levels spare a great deal of time to talk trainees through the matters or deals in which they are involved, so that you obtain a deep understanding not only of particular legal aspects involved, but also the commercial points and the client's background and interests. I have had considerable external training on various topics including client care and effective negotiation skills. I have been able to make significant strides in my legal research and drafting skills, while my increasing exposure to clients has enabled me to improve my professional communication skills."
First year trainee, London

2014

"The training I have received has mainly been 'on the job training' rather than formal training."
