Informal Training & Mentoring

9.0 / 10

(based on 10 ratings in 2019)

2019

"It's very much up to the trainee to get this. I personally had a great experience because I was confident to ask for advice and feedback. It's more difficult if you are shy. Praise is often given both outspokenly and subtly and you get recognition if you've worked very hard."

"There's an excellent formalised mentoring programme. The culture of the firm also makes for great informal mentoring as partners and associates are always willing to discuss your training, development and any other issues."

"Senior members of the firm are generally very accessible and great to work with. Everyone is always happy to offer feedback on your work and the appraisal process for trainees is extremely helpful to track your progress."

"This can be varied but I have mostly had great experiences with associates and partners and their interest in my development. You must be proactive but you get a lot back if you are."

"The firm places a lot of emphasis on building your own mentoring network and I think this is done very effectively. There are formal routes where you are assigned a mentor and more informal routes where partners and senior associates are generally open to discussing your professional development."
Second year trainee,

"The firm offers us a trainee-responsible partner, and a personal mentor if we want one."
Second year trainee, London
"The partners and supervisors are good at giving praise, and they are very accessible to give advice and feedback."

"I have found the mentors to be excellent at developing the careers of trainees at the firm."
First year trainee, London
"My experiences of being mentored while at the firm have been very good, and building up relationships with the individual solicitors/partners was important to me. I found that solicitors and partners do a good job of making themselves available in the midst of their busy schedules."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone is hugely accessible at the firm, from support staff all the way to the partners. Several times I have worked alone alongside a partner and it is evident that they take our progress and development very seriously, pushing us to learn more and take on responsibility, while simultaneously offering their experience and guidance. Everyone at the firm is willing to teach or explain things to you, and there is a culture that the trainees need to be developed into functioning, skilful practitioners as quickly as possible to help drive the future success of the firm. I receive recognition and praise (in varying degrees) for pretty much every piece of work I do, and feedback is always delivered in a tactful and constructive fashion."
