Whether you are pondering different career paths or you’re set on a career in technology, I would highly recommend you apply to attend the IT’s not just for the boys! event run by TARGETjobs. I first heard about the various opportunities run by TARGETjobs by signing up to their email list when I first enrolled at university. Back in January, I applied to the event by submitting a CV and short answers to a couple of questions. I was initially sceptical of receiving a place on the day as I am currently studying for an engineering degree; however, after my phone interview with a representative from the TARGETjobs events team, I was in! I was so excited to attend the day and immediately booked my train tickets down to London.
Overall, the day was amazing. It was everything I had hoped it would be and more. After arriving in Canary Wharf I walked from the tube station to the KPMG offices. The building was amazing and it felt as if I was working full time in London. Throughout the day, I attended workshops on building your own personal brand, designed the interface for an app in a group project and heard from employees from a range of different companies. These included Bloomberg, J.P. Morgan, GSK, KPMG, ThoughtWorks and Arqiva. Talking to the various firms and gaining an insight into their culture is invaluable. The inside knowledge of the companies will help you stand out in the recruitment process as you are able to show your interest and commitment to them. The employers were really encouraging and helped me to gain confidence in submitting a successful application.
After the event, I applied to a number of programmes such as J.P. Morgan’s Code for Good hackathon and Bloomberg’s summer insight programme. Despite the hackathon being cancelled due to coronavirus, I proceeded to the next stages for Bloomberg’s summer insight programme, which were a psychometric test and video interview. The final stage was a second video interview with one representative from the Analytics & Sales team and a leader in the Global Data team. After my research and insider knowledge of the industry, the next day I received a phone call to say I had received an offer! I was absolutely elated to secure my first internship and increase my knowledge of the industry. Next year, I hope to apply to the summer internship in Global Data and explore my interest in finance further.
For any student reading this, I would 100% recommend applying to the IT’s not just for the boys! event. Everyone is so friendly and I made connections with both peers and employers. The day is highly beneficial for students of all levels and all you need to apply is pure motivation and interest in the profession. I am grateful to TARGETjobs for putting on this event. I am excited to attend their Undergraduate of the Year Awards later this year, in which I am a finalist in the Engineering and Construction category, and I also plan to attend their Future Female Engineers event. Put yourself out there and you never know the opportunities that will come your way!
