We are searching for exceptional undergraduates with a genuine interest in commodities trading, engineering or environmental sciences. We look for disciplined people who can demonstrate entrepreneurial ability, thrive on logistical challenges and can provide practical solutions to complex problems utilising mathematical and coding capability.

Our Industrial Placements programme is structured to bring out the very best in you and give you the opportunity to excel in a commercial, engineering or environmental sciences role, working alongside the very best people in the business.

You will be trusted with individual responsibility from day one in a complex and demanding role, primarily within Risk, Analytics, Project Engineering or our Health, Environment & Communities (HSEC) department. Other commercial areas of the business include Operations. This approach equips our Industrial Placements with the highest levels of professionalism, personal ownership and commercial aptitude - the key ingredients for a successful career with Glencore.

If everything works out well, you could even secure a job with us after you graduate.

Our trainees work in the following areas:

  • Trading operations

Our trading operators work alongside our physical traders and are responsible for the logistical and financial execution of each contract. This is a highly commercial role where attention to detail and precise communication are paramount. The operator has a material impact on every stage of the trade, from management of the shipping and transportation, legal and contractual considerations through to financial risk analysis and final settlement of the deal.

A trading operator has a direct financial impact on the trading book and will work closely with the trading, chartering and financial teams in order to ensure that commercial value is maximised as well as mitigating operational risk.

  • Risk management

Our risk managers work closely with front line traders and operators. Risk managers maintain physical and derivative exposure whilst assessing the accuracy and validity of mark-to-markets in order to produce profit and loss reports and risk metrics. They provide analysis ensuring that hedging is executed in line with our trading team’s strategy.

Accuracy, confidence and exceptional analytical skills are key attributes in this area of our business. As a key member of the trading team, excellent communication and relationship management skills are required to maintain an independent view whilst also adding value by providing accurate data directly to the trading desk.

  • Oil Analysis

Our trading analysts work directly with our traders to evaluate fundamental global market supply and demand across the barrel utilizing mathematical and programming techniques. Our analysts work closely with traders, shipping and IT, developing tools in order to deliver value to the business.

Forecasting market trends and strategic global thinking are important skills. A good analyst will proactively form an independent view of the market and present clear and concise data to support this opinion. This data will be used to add value and inspire commercial strategy within the trading teams.

  • Project Engineering

Projects are predominantly based in Africa & Brazil and comprise a mix of greenfield and brownfield work scopes associated with oil/gas production, storage, production, including maintenance and day-to-day operational support.

The role entails exposure to day to day project support in an oil production environment, with the benefit of being involved from an early phase right through to commissioning. Candidates must be driven and focussed, able to communicate with team members or cross business departments, with the aim of ultimately becoming a well-rounded project engineer.
