The Antenna Group is responsible for the design, manufacture, test and delivery of exceptionally reliable, high performance and mission critical antenna systems for telecommunication satellites. We operate as part of the telecoms business unit, fully integrated into the satellite project team. It is an exciting time of product development as we are working with customers to define the next generation telecoms payload and antenna systems, requiring innovative and challenging RF and mechanical solutions to achieve the most advanced spacecraft on the market.

The Antenna mechanical engineering group works side by side with radio frequency experts to provide mechanical solutions and structure designs, providing the stability, alignment, and support needed throughout the satellite life, from on-ground testing, through launch and for up to 20 years operation in space. Working with experts from CAD, Stress, Thermal, Materials, Testing, Manufacturing, and more, the Mechanical Engineer defines the design concept and develops the detail design, manages the mechanical and electrical interfaces to other satellite systems, and works with the overall satellite design team to accommodate the antenna onto the satellite structure in the optimum way.

The Mechanical Engineering graduate will join an experienced team and have the opportunity to take part in an extensive training programme to develop all the skills needed to run a successful design project within the wider antenna project team, and will be involved in organising the supporting functions and performing all aspects of delivering the mechanical product. The mechanical group also carries out research and development projects, developing new technologies, new ways to use existing technologies, and better ways to design, manufacture and test satellite antennas. The mechanical engineering graduate will work on these projects alongside experienced engineers and develop the skills and methods needed to perform successful R&D campaigns.


Working as part of one or more integrated Antenna project teams, the main activities of the mechanical engineer will include:

  • Developing mechanical designs.
  • Liaising with supporting functions on the details of the design, e.g. CAD, stress, thermal, materials, test, manufacturing, etc.
  • Providing mechanical design documents to support customer design reviews along the life of the project
  • Participating in project and product development meetings
  • Development and qualification of new products, processes, and methods for building antennas faster, better and cheaper


  • Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following;
  • A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, Physics or a related subject
  • A good understanding of Mechanical design methods and practices
  • Knowledge of materials, manufacturing methods and design for manufacture
  • Experience of working successfully within teams
  • Knowledge of CAD tools and FEA would be beneficial

This role will be based in Stevenage and will receive the full Airbus Defence & Space Graduate programme benefit package including an annual Salary of £27,000, plus a welcome payment of £2,000
