Satellite Assembly Integration and Test (Electrical) integrates the electrical units that make up the spacecraft platform and electrically and functionally testing the spacecraft. Test Engineering provides many exciting challenges as we work with the engineering teams to design the best methods of closing out the test requirements. Following the build and baseline test the team and spacecraft travel to the environmental site, typically in Europe to complete a full system test while the spacecraft is inside a thermal vacuum chamber, EMC chamber and often magnetic test facility. Finally we accompany the spacecraft to the launch site which could be French Guiana, Florida or Russia and complete testing and integration to the launcher ahead of supporting the actual launch day. Travel opportunities are very much a part of this exciting role. Our current projects include the Solar Orbiter sun exploration mission, building Europe’s Mars Rover and the Biomass earth observation satellite; all for ESA. We have also launched Lisa Pathfinder, Sentinel 5P and Aeolus in recent years.

Main activities of the role may include:

  • Engineering tests from a test requirement.
  • Coding test sequences to send commands, request telemetry, collaborate with test equipment and process results to complete the tests.
  • Prepare test procedures and perform them to complete electrical measurements on the spacecraft using multiple lab equipment, such as meters, dynamic loads, scopes, data analysers or RF test equipment.
  • Support engineering meetings to discuss issues found and work to finding solutions
  • Preparing test reports and other support documentation.

Required skills

You can demonstrate the following;

  • Degree in Electrical Systems, Avionics, Space or similar Engineering domain.
  • High level of practical 'hands-on’ application of engineering.
  • Good knowledge of programming and scripting in multiple languages (C, Java, bash scripting).
  • Positive and proactive with a 'can do’ attitude and a team player.
  • High standard of documentation and communication.
