Placement

£22,906 - £30,053

About us

National Grid is at the heart of the energy future, and our people are at the heart of National Grid. We’re 30,000 colleagues strong. In the UK, National Grid don’t generate or sell energy – we join the dots to get energy from A to B. From making a cup of tea in the morning, to keeping the lights on in hospitals, our electricity network puts power in the hands of people. Without it, the world as we know it would grind to a halt.

The world of energy is changing beyond recognition as we focus on building a cleaner, greener future. Working at National Grid, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in the UK – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.

Our values and principles

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of who we are and what we do. Our commitment to these values is unwavering and they are central to our mission. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities and industries and we are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments that you require.

About the role

Would you like to start your career in an ethical organisation that serves every single person in England and Wales? Then our Year in Industry Placement might just be for you.

As owners of Wales and England’s electricity transmission network, we’re at the vanguard of the energy transition. We’re spending £24 billion over the next five years on sustainable energy, and are one of the FTSE’s biggest investors in the delivery of Net Zero.

As we make these kinds of moves we’re looking for the brightest engineering undergraduates to help us.

We’re offering a year’s paid placement. You’ll be based in our Asset Operations department where we look after the physical assets that make electricity happen, such as overhead lines and substations.

As an undergraduate on our Asset Management Engineer placement, you’ll be helping invest in and look after National Grid by maintaining and upgrading our assets.

You’ll be contributing to big, exciting projects with real life applications. For example, you might be working on building a substation that will provide electricity for hundreds of thousands of people. Or perhaps on an under-the-sea interconnector that joins us to the European electricity grid.

You’ll get to see and experience in person all the things you read about in your textbooks. It’s a great way to put your academic theory into practise and strengthen your CV. Plus, if we’re really impressed and there’s an open position, we might just offer you a job once you’ve finished your degree! There is also the option to join our graduate scheme too.

“Everyone was so nice, I felt welcomed into the team from day one. It’s also a great way to get your foot in the door – a year-long interview to show what you’re made of!”
Oliver Rowell, Undergraduate
