We’ll help you develop the knowledge and skills to become a well rounded Communications & Marketing professional, whether in a business partnering, strategy, or delivery role.
About the programme
Communications & Marketing partner with the bank’s franchises and functions to champion the voice of the customer across the bank, grow our businesses, build pride with our colleagues and improve our reputation with external stakeholders. This graduate programme will take you to the heart of our businesses and brands.
We’ll support you to develop your knowledge and skills around strategy, execution, understanding our customers and specialist communications and marketing disciplines. You’ll have the opportunity to work across our teams, supporting the bank in being brand-led and customer focussed.
We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.
After a full induction, the programme’s structured around four, six month rotations, each based in different areas of Communications & Marketing. You can expect to develop skills and attributes that’ll put you at the forefront of the industry and prepare you for further progression. You’ll work towards a recognised formal qualification as part of your development. It’s important that it’s the right qualification for you, so you’ll have a choice from a range of accredited qualifications from leading industry bodies.
During this programme, you can expect to:
- Gain insight into the strategy of the bank’s franchises and functions
- Help to deliver both internal and external campaigns
- Gain experience consulting on specialist disciplines such as corporate affairs or sustainable banking
- Build essential influencing and stakeholder management skills
- Conduct research to understand our customers, performance, and competitors
- Write reports, proposals, briefs and articles
- Work with our third party agencies and suppliers on projects and campaigns
- Respond to internal and external stakeholder queries
At the end of the two years, we hope to see you join us in a permanent role. We’ll support your career development throughout, but particularly during your last rotation we’ll focus on what roles you could step in to next.

Before you start, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ (a graduate already on the programme) who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.
You’ll also be assigned a Graduate Coach and a Placement Manager. Your Graduate Coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal development plan. Your Placement Manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

Graduate professional development
If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.
Banking, RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond by building your knowledge. It’s training that all our graduates take part in and it’ll help you understand how our entire business operates.
The training focuses on:
- How our business is structured
- Who our customers are
- How we manage risk
- How we’re innovating and the external business climate
- Networking with other business areas
- Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation
The training is delivered in lots of different ways, including:
- Live virtual sessions using our internal social network, Workplace
- Workshops with our Entrepreneurial Development Academy
- Shadowing colleagues
- Sessions with mentors
We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other and how we drive successful customer outcomes.
You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.
After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. We assign you a business area, placement manager and team in our Communications & Marketing function and be immersed in their work for six months.
For the remaining rotations, you’ll have time to discuss options with your graduate coach, and you’ll move across various teams to build a diverse skill set that supports the business and our customers. You’ll have an opportunity to tell us your preferences for the final placement, but this will depend on both your motivations and the business’s needs.
The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do.
As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.

During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.
You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!
To be eligible for this graduate programme, you’ll need to have, or be on course to achieving a 2:1 in your degree.
We’re looking for creative and passionate people, with excellent communication skills. You’ll also be confident dealing with people, able to build strong relationships and networks.
It’s essential you can demonstrate a customer focus, as well as an interest in current affairs. You’ll be open to learning how digital can change and enhance the way that we work and in taking ownership and initiative when it comes to your own work.
