The complex Warheads Centre of Excellence is an integrated team situated across sites in Stevenage, Bolton and Paris and their role is to:
- Act as the company's design authority for warheads.
- Predict the lethal performance of various types of missile systems.
- Provide expertise in the skill areas of warheads, explosives, target detection and weapon lethality.
The Stevenage based team primarily undertakes modelling of the missile terminal engagement, the target detection, warhead detonation and lethal performance prediction.
What's the opportunity?
This is a unique opportunity to be an integral part of a specialised group of engineers with mixed skills, involved in assessing the lethal performance of various missile systems. The skills we utilise are not typical in academia and so joining the team presents an opportunity for you to develop skills in numerous aspects of missile lethality that you would not get anywhere else.
From the very start of the placement, you will be involved in applying a bespoke set of modelling tools, with support and guidance from the team's engineers, to evaluate and investigate the lethality of developing and future missile systems. These in-house tools are principally fast running systematic models written in MATLAB; however, other tools are used, ranging from CAD design software to complex finite element style hydrocodes.
During your placement, you will gain knowledge and be able to apply an understanding of fuzing techniques, warhead technologies, lethal effects and lethality assessment modelling methods to various types of missile systems in development by MBDA.
You will be expected to work on your own or in a small team, with limited supervision, as required, on short tasks (typically of a few weeks to a few months duration).
What's in it for you?
You'll no doubt have seen all the information on our website about our comprehensive and customisable benefits package (please note that not all benefits are available to our summer placement and undergraduate students).
What are we looking for?
- Working towards a Bachelor's degree in an Engineering, Mathematical or Applied Science discipline.
- A willingness to learn new skills and the ability to apply newly gained knowledge to overcome engineering problems.
- The ability to communicate ideas clearly, including technical information, both verbally and in writing.
MBDA is committed to providing an inclusive working environment where our employees can be themselves and everyone has equal opportunity to reach their full potential. We value difference and know that a diverse community makes for greater innovation and brings a breadth of skills, experience and perspectives.
All graduates, undergraduates and apprentices at MBDA are required to achieve the appropriate clearance relevant to their respective role. Some roles, may be reserved for UK nationals and certain categories of information may be restricted to UK nationals also. To gain suitable clearance individuals will need to have lived in UK for up to 5 years dependent on the level of clearance required.
