About the programme

Within our Customer Solutions pathway you can apply to either our Commercial Banking programme or our Structured Finance programme. Both these two year programmes are designed to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a well-rounded banker and future leader.

The Commercial Banking Programme offers a comprehensive grounding in commercial banking. As a key part of this, you’ll be working directly with a diverse group of corporate customers to understand their needs and develop your relationship building skills. In addition it provides a unique opportunity to shape the bank’s innovation and digital agenda.

  • Gaining experience of building client relationships
  • Building robust credit, lending and risk management skills
  • Acquiring insight into product development, innovation, and our growing digital banking capability
  • Developing the confidence and critical capabilities you need for success in the bank

Our Structured Finance programme focuses more specifically on larger more sophisticated corporate and institutional clients, with complex financing needs. It will provide you with the specialist skills to build your career across a wide range of debt financing products.

On the Structured Finance programme, you can look forward to:

  • Gaining experience of building client relationships
  • Developing a deep understanding of our customers’ needs and expertise in the products we offer

Supporting you

We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community they have shaped.

Before you join us, we’ll pair you with a ‘buddy’ who’ll be a graduate already on the programme, and who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.

We’ll also assign you a line manager and a desk manager. Your graduate coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal development plan. Your placement manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

For a fuller picture of how you’ll progress through the programme and the support you’ll receive at each stage, check out the Graduate Professional Development journey below.

Graduate Professional Development

If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.
Banking, RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond by building your knowledge. It’s training that all our graduates take part in and it’ll help you understand how our entire business operates.

The training focuses on:

  • How our business is structured
  • Who our customers are
  • How we manage risk
  • How we’re innovating and the external business climate
  • Networking with other business areas
  • Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation

The training is delivered in lots of different ways, including:

  • Live virtual sessions using our internal social network, Workplace
  • Workshops with our Entrepreneurial Development Academy
  • Simulations
  • Shadowing colleagues
  • Sessions with mentors

We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other and how we drive successful customer outcomes.

You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.

After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. You’ll be assigned a line manager and team in Commercial Banking or Structured Finance (depending on your programme) and be immersed in their work for six months.

For the following rotations, depending on your programme, you’ll either be allocated to a rotation based on the skills and experiences you have to develop, or you’ll have time to discuss options with your support team and apply to the areas that interest you. The final rotation will depend on both your motivations and the business’s needs.

The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.

As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.

As part of our Commercial Banking programme, you’ll be required to complete a professional qualification. There’ll also be the opportunity for this if you’re joining our Structured Finance programme, although this is not mandatory.

Community project

During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.

You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!

About you

You’ll need to be on course for, or already possess, a 2:1 in your degree. There’s no one subject area we have in mind, but we’ll be looking out for people:

  • Who are team players
  • With a real customer focus
  • Who have strong communication skills
  • Who are entrepreneurial, think differently and are willing to challenge
  • With high personal integrity
  • Who are ambitious, and willing to learn and adapt

To shape the future of Commercial Banking and Structured Finance we need intelligent, highly motivated and forward-thinking people; people who are curious to approach things from fresh perspectives, with the ability to build credible relationships. You’ll also have the determination to help shape the best solutions for our customers.

If that sounds like you, then why not join us?
