Get your career off to a fantastic start with our 10 week paid internship in Customer Solutions.

You’ll gain real insight into the world of commercial banking, and be well placed to join our graduate programme the following year.

About the programme

Within the Customer Solutions pathway, we have two distinct internship options. You can apply to either our Commercial Banking or our Structured Finance programme.

We’ve designed both of these 10 week summer internships to give you first hand experience of the work we do in our Commercial Banking business. You’ll learn about our values and goals, the products and services we provide, and how we work together to deliver outstanding service for our customers.

The Commercial Banking internship covers a diverse range of customer relationships, while our Structured Finance internship focuses more specifically on larger clients with complex financing needs. You can read in more detail about the individual internships in the listings below.

On both programmes, we’ll reward you with a salary of £21,500 pro rata, depending on location.

What you'll do

The internship starts with an induction. You’ll then begin a 10 week placement where you’ll attend training workshops, get involved with our day to day work, and take part in a business project. If you join Commercial Banking, you’ll complete this project individually and, if you join Structured Finance, you’ll do it in teams.

You’ll be updating your learning log so, towards the end of the internship, you’ll be able to show us everything you’ve learned in your final assessment.

We’ll pair you up with a ‘buddy’ and a manager who’ll support you for the full 10 weeks. Your buddy will be a current graduate who’ll help you get settled by sharing their experience. Your line manager will provide guidance and support throughout the programme, and help you grow your professional network.

Learning Journey

Onboarding

If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our website for successful interns – it’s our onboarding portal. We use it because it’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you throughout your 10 weeks. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.

Induction

During the induction, you’ll learn about RBS, meet your fellow interns and have the chance to talk with colleagues, including senior leaders, from around our business.

As well as giving you an overview of the bank, the induction will outline the goals of the programme, introduce you to our values and explain the work you’ll be involved in over the next 10 weeks. You’ll also learn about the training we’ll provide and how the programme is assessed.

Structured Finance

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll complete two rotations, giving you varied insight into the different types of work we undertake across each desk. 

You’ll get involved with a research and development project, which you’ll present back to your team at the end of each rotation.

During your last week, you’ll complete the ‘FireDrill’ group exercise which you’ll present to a panel, and on which your main assessment will be based.

Commercial Banking

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll be taking part in a business improvement project, linked to your business area.

We’ll ask you to find a solution, or improvement in a specific area. This’ll give you the chance to complete research on a topic, work collaboratively, develop a business plan, and come up with recommendations for improvement or change to support our ambitions. You’ll present on this towards the end of the programme.

This will be a great way of putting new ideas forward, making a real contribution and getting a sense of what our team culture is really all about. You’ll find out about the specifics of this project during your induction.

Community project

In addition to the business project, you’ll take part in a community fund-raising challenge. Working in teams, you’ll have a few weeks to create a business plan, with the goal of raising as much money as possible in one day of fund-raising activity for your team’s chosen charity. You’ll then put your plan into practice on the day.

Throughout the challenge, our graduates will support you. This isn’t a formal assessment, but it’s a great opportunity to hone your skills and have some fun, while contributing to a valuable cause.

Assessment

Towards the end of the internship, you’ll be assessed on what you’ve learned against the goals and values explained in the induction. You’ll be keeping up a learning log, week by week, and you’ll be discussing progress with your line manager throughout.

For Commercial Banking, in the penultimate week you’ll give a presentation on the business improvement project you’ve been involved in, and you’ll also have an end of internship review.

For Structured Finance, in the final week, you’ll complete the ‘FireDrill’ group exercise which you’ll present to a panel, and on which your main assessment will be based.

Complete these successfully, and you could be offered a place on our 2021 Customer Solutions graduate pathway.

From there you can carry the skills you’ve learned forward and take the next exciting step in your career.

About you

To be eligible for either of these internships, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a university degree, and on course for a 2:1.
