As a graduate trainee you’ll be gaining first-hand experience of the vital role data plays in our business and building a compelling blend of technical and people skills that will prove invaluable in your career.
About the programme
The aim of this two year programme is to equip you with the knowledge, skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading data professional.
Our Data programme specifically focusses on helping the business put data at the core of its decision making. It also ensures the business is able to make well informed, fact based, data driven decisions and develop data driven solutions. You’ll learn how we are fundamentally changing how data drives customer experience, ensuring data is at the heart of how we contact our customers, making every interaction with them personal, timely and relevant.
We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.
During the programme you’ll look forward to:
- Learning the technical skills needed to succeed as an analyst
- Learning how our Data Academy can enable you to develop a strong foundation in critical data skills, and provide the opportunity to master specialisms like data science and data engineering
- Interrogating, interpreting and visualising large volumes of data
- Learning how to articulate complex situations and technical work to non technical stakeholders
- Driving the use of data to ensure better customer engagement
- Building your confidence, and developing your influencing and stakeholder management skills
After a full induction the programme is structured around a series of placement rotations, working across a range of teams within the bank focused on data.
On completing the programme, you’ll be well positioned for the next stage of your career in data. . We’ll be advising you on career development throughout, but particularly during your last rotation we’ll focus on which roles you should consider as a next step.
The Data pathway is excellent preparation for a wide range of career paths, and some of the possible next roles to move into could include:
- Data Scientist
- Data Engineer
- Data Analyst
We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community our graduates have shaped themselves.
Before you start, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ who’ll be a graduate already on the programme, and who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.
You’ll also be assigned a Graduate Coach and a Placement Manager. Your Graduate Coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal capability plan. Your Placement Manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

Graduate professional development
If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.
#Banking, #RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond by building your knowledge. It’s training that all our graduates take part in and it’ll help you understand how our entire business operates.
The training focuses on:
- How our business is structured
- Who our customers are
- How we manage risk
- How we’re innovating and the external business climate
- Networking with other business areas
- Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation
The training is delivered in lots of different ways, including:
- Live virtual sessions using our internal social network, Workplace
- Workshops with our Entrepreneurial Development Academy
- Shadowing colleagues
- Sessions with mentors
We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other and how we drive successful customer outcomes.
You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.
After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. We’ll assign you a Placement Manager and a team so you can then be immersed in its work for six months.
For the remaining rotations you’ll have time to discuss options with your support team and apply to the areas that interest you. The final choice will depend on both your motivations and the business’s needs.
The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.
As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.
This will include completing a formal qualification and becoming proficient with a range of cutting edge technologies.
During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.
You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!
To be eligible for this programme you’ll need to have, or be on course for, a 2:1 in your degree.
We’re looking for curious and inquisitive people, with a real passion for data and technology and the drive to explore how it can be used to make a positive difference for our customers.
You’ll also need:
- A strong customer focus
- Problem solving skills, with a willingness to learn and quickly adapt to change
- An innovative and creative mind set
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build great working relationships as you work towards a common goal
- An analytical approach and an appreciation of analysis techniques
In short, you’ll be something of an all-rounder, as comfortable solving technical problems as you are explaining concepts and thrashing out ideas with others.
