This is an opportunity for undergraduate students who are undertaking a sandwich placement year and are part-way through their degree studies.

Our Knowledge and Information Services (KIS) team are Dstl’s gateway to internal and external knowledge with a vital role supporting Dstl, the Ministry of Defence (MOD,) the wider defence community and Other Government Departments (OGDs) with their information needs. We work in one of the most challenging and complex areas of defence, which will allow you, learn your professional skill sets, whilst undertaking great development opportunities. We are passionate about delivering highly rewarding research to help protect the UK and our armed forces from real world threats, both at home and abroad. We need hardworking, forward thinking and enthusiastic individuals to provide working operational level support to our technical operational Divisions.

As a placement student you will have the opportunity to work with Knowledge and Information Agents to gain a broad understanding of the range of research that Dstl carries out in support of defence science and technology and contribute directly by providing bespoke knowledge and information services to enable and support this work.

Job description

As an Industrial Placement you'll be able to experience the breadth of research carried out across Dstl and make your mark in providing crucial support to our world class scientists and engineers. You'll get the opportunity to really make your mark in a variety of ways but some of the key activities you'll get to be a part of are:

• Engaging with clients to determine/refine their requirements and advise on the best course of action to meet their information and knowledge needs.
• Providing timely, literature-based research deliverables, enabling clients to make informed decisions, by exploiting appropriate resources for internal, academic and open source information.
• Supporting our training to enable Dstl staff to fully engage with, and benefit from, the various knowledge and information resources available.


We are looking for someone who is:

Curious - You have a desire to work with colleagues and understand their information and knowledge needs.
Communicator - You have an ability to communicate clearly with a diverse range of people using different formats.
Organised - You have the skills to organise and prioritise your workload in order to deliver work to deadlines.
IT Competent - You have a good level of IT literacy, with good knowledge of Microsoft Office packages.
Researcher - You have experienceExperience of literature-based research, preferably gained in a scientific, technical, engineering, analytical, mathematical, or military-related domain.

Studying - You should be undertaking a degree in a STEAM subject (science, technology, engineering, analysis or mathematics). This includes the social sciences. You will have an opportunity to provide your degree details during the application process.
