The Central Laser Facility (CLF) is one of the world’s leading laser centres, providing scientists from across the UK and Europe with access to an unparalleled range of state of the art laser technology. Currently employing around 180 staff, its function as an international research facility has led to the development of a friendly and outgoing work environment; a welcoming and inclusive culture within which people naturally help and support one another.

The CLF Electrical Engineering group provides design, installation and operational support across the facility. In particular, the HV team hold complete responsibility for all HV equipment within the facility, up to and including the 24kV pulsed power system which supplies the Vulcan laser (1 Peta-watt system).

  • Electrical system and electronic circuit design.
  • Modelling of systems using FEA or simulation software.
  • Produce calculations to validate designs.
  • Build and run test systems.
  • Presentation and documentation of designs using CAD.
  • Manage project workload to ensure targets are met.
  • Present work both in writing and verbally to a wide range of audiences.
  • Support the operations teams in investigation and repair of faults.
  • Liaise with various teams across the CLF.

In order to apply for this role you must have:


  • Obtained a minimum 2:1 bachelor’s degree or above in a relevant subject in either 2020, 2021 or be due to receive it in 2022
  • The right to live and work in the UK 
  • Good understanding of electrical/electronic principles 
  • Able to collaborate with others and take ownership for their work 
  • Ability to understand technical information including circuit diagrams and technical drawings 
  • Ambition to learn 


  • Able to manage own workload
  • Good communication skills
  • Completed placements or summer work in a relevant field
