Graduate Scheme - Roles in Scientific Computing and IT
Science and Technology Facility Council Graduate Scheme – Scientific Computing and IT
What is the Science and Technology Facilities Council?
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through outstanding facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and Engineering.
STFC is one of the nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation; a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.
We operate some of the world’s most ambitious scientific and engineering facilities – offering you the chance to work at prestigious locations around the globe. We work to the highest standards, yet the atmosphere across our locations is relaxed and friendly.
Scientific Computing and IT at STFC
Do you have a keen interest in computer systems? Perhaps you are a hardworking software developer and you’re looking to make a difference to people’s lives with the work you complete. Or perhaps you’re passionate about IT and infrastructure. These are just some of the exciting pathways available within Scientific Computing and IT.
Within the Scientific Computing Department we research, develop and support leading edge high-performance computational & data storage infrastructures and scientific software to perform and support world class science.
Our IT teams ensure that our large workforce and innovative science sites are kept online and running day in day out, 24/7. They support the ground breaking science that happens on site. It simply wouldn’t happen without IT in the background.
The STFC Graduate Scheme
Our graduates join us in a permanent position, starting a real job from day one. Graduates enjoy two years of formal soft skills together with technical training and development, as well as a direct route to professional accreditation. STFC graduates have the opportunity to build on their degree, taking their understanding, knowledge and skills to a new level in a multifaceted, creative, collaborative culture.
A large number of our graduates choose to work towards chartered status with their professional body. The graduate scheme is accredited with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Physics, and we have achieved an interim accreditation with the British Computer Society.
What do we look for?
We are looking for highly motivated people who are excited by the prospect of working with cutting edge engineering at a world leading organisation. We are looking for hardworking people who can help us to provide the technology that allows our world-leading science to make a real difference in areas that really matter: from cancer treatment to airport security, high-tech jobs to hydrogen powered cars, energy generation to accident scene emergency care, our impact is felt in many aspects of daily life.
In order to join our graduate scheme you must have achieved, or be on track to achieve, a minimum of a 2.1 in your undergraduate and have graduated from university no earlier than 2020. All applicants must have the right to live and work without restriction in the UK. You must be available to start full time work by the 12th of September 2022.
