What does an Synthetic Biochemistry industrial placement have to offer?
The Synthetic Biochemistry Group is an enterprise group within the Cell and Gene Therapy department supporting several business areas within R&D (Research and Development) and GMS (Global Manufacturing and Supply). Based in Stevenage, our group’s mission is to provide biocatalysis tools to replace traditional synthetic chemistry methods used in the production of small molecule APIs (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients), by introducing enzymes to gain higher stereochemical control of reactions, reducing the amount of organic solvents and minimising the impact of our processes on the environment.
The group employs state-of-art analytical facilities to identify enzymes able to carry out reactions of interest with intermediates in the various API chemical routes and has an enzyme evolution platform to enable engineering of the selected catalysts to improve kinetics properties, solvent and thermostability tolerance. A successful candidate will work across a range of techniques and will have the opportunity to contribute to enzyme panel builds, using molecular biology techniques to clone and select enzyme candidates, develop and optimise expression of recombinant enzymes as well as run HPLC/GC and/or LC-MS assays to quantify reaction products. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work on the implementation of biocatalysis for the manufacture of GSK APIs.We recruit on an on-going basis and prioritise applications based on the application date. Applications will closed when we have filled our assessment centre dates. If you have what we’re looking for apply today!
This opportunity has the following recruitment stages you must successfully pass to be offered a placement year with GSK for 2020:
