The responsibility of the Electronic Engineering function is to provide MBDA programmes with electronic equipment (for missiles, test equipment and launch systems). The electronic equipment we design ranges from weapon controller units and actuator electronics to telemetry & communication systems.
The products we design must be able to function in exceptionally harsh environments. It is also vital that our designs are extremely reliable and extremely safe. As well as this, our complex equipment usually has to fit into very confined spaces. These design constraints make the equipment we design very specialised which means we require original ideas and innovative approaches to the way we design our electronic products.
What’s the opportunity?
You will be part of a small team of other undergraduate summer placement students. The placement will last 3 months, during which you will be given a missile related project to plan, manage, design and deliver. How you meet the solution will be down to you and your team members to determine. To help guide you, you will be supported by experienced engineers from multiple engineering disciplines (Mechanical, Test Systems, Software, etc.). You will also have dedicated mentors to help you both technically and professionally.
The projects provide you with the opportunity to develop you skills and knowledge in one or a number of the following electronics design related skills:
- Detailed Circuit Design.
- Analogue and Digital Circuit Test Techniques.
- Analysis and Characterisation Techniques.
- Manufacturing (Machining, PCB Manufacture, Circuit Card Assembly).
- Test & Evaluation of Design.
All the training Schemes within Electronics Engineering are accredited with the IET. Registration at Eng. Tech level is a possibility for undergraduates who have 2+ Summer Industrial Placements. MBDA can help in achieving this registration during the Summer Placement period.
What will you be doing?
You will be spending time in the lab, building experimental hardware and in some cases may be writing some software and firmware. You will gain exposure to the schematic design tool we use (Zuken) and will continue to develop your time management and project planning skills. Depending on which project you become involved in, you may also use modelling & simulation tools such as Matlab and Simulink.
You may travel occasionally to visit other MBDA sites, although most of your work will be conducted on site in Stevenage; either in the lab or in the office.

What are we looking for?
- Currently studying towards a Degree in electronic engineering, general engineering (with electronics), or related subjects (maths or physics based).
- Motivated and committed with good organisational skills and an appetite for learning new skills.
- Interest in electronic engineering, technology, and engineering in general.
- Practical knowledge of common software languages (C/C++, VHDL, etc.) is beneficial but not essential.
