Why should I choose the Met Office?:
As an Industrial Placement at the Met Office, you will be paid £17,000 pa and have the opportunity to spend 12 months (between July 2020 - July 2021) working full-time based in Exeter at the Met Office but travel to remote sites, with experienced property engineers will also be required.
You will be supporting day to day operations within the property management team, completing risk assessments, verifying method statements and helping with engineering solutions. You’ll also have opportunity to help us develop and deliver some new initiatives such as energy efficiency and air quality.

Tell me a little more about what you do:
The Property Management team has responsibility for all mechanical and electrical assets and systems across the Met Office Estate. The Estate comprises of over 500 manned and unmanned sites across the UK. The post holder will be part of the building services engineering team and will have an experienced and fully qualified mechanical engineer as their mentor.
Previous placements have worked on projects to deliver efficiencies such as upgrading the cooling system of our supercomputer to deliver cost benefits. They have also worked on identifying improvements and efficiencies to our HVAC systems to deliver wide ranging benefits.
Can I apply?:
To become a Mechanical Engineering Industrial Placement at the Met Office you will need to be someone who:
- Is currently studying for an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering which MUST incorporate a placement year (i.e. sandwich course).
- Demonstrates evidence of good oral and written communication skills
- Can plan and organise work using own initiative
- Proven ability to work well as a member of a team
- Can demonstrate evidence of problem solving
As well as someone who can desirably demonstrate:
- Any experience of working in an mechanical engineering environment.

When will I hear if I have been shortlisted?:
