How long is the scheme?

Two years attached to a central rotational scheme (plus two further rotation, monitored in your first appointment)

Where you’ll be based

Opportunities are available across Britain, at locations including: Stratford, Derby, Glasgow, London, Bristol, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Gateshead, Leeds, Cardiff, Waterloo, Manchester.

What you’ll be doing

Our engineering graduates undertake four six-month rotational placements. The placements you undertake will depend on your own degree discipline, the needs of the business unit and what most interests you.  They will however all follow the scheme requirements.

All of our workplace experiential learning placements within our Engineering teams are supported by technical and leadership training which you will attend during the two years attached to the Engineering Graduate programme.

When you start your journey with us we will make sure that you have all the tools you need to be successful in our industry, we will smooth your pathway into the business with a friendly welcoming week designed to help you understand the things we value as an organisation Safety, our passenger and customers’ needs the culture and behaviours we demonstrate.  We also provide clear initial technical training to make sure you are ready for roles you will have the opportunity to be involved in during your scheme and a local induction, so you can see the local asset base and meet your colleagues locally.

Your initial rotation, Business Familiarisation or appreciation will provide an exciting overview of Engineering in our industry, using short placement initially in local Engineering teams it will create an opportunity for you to see the career opportunities for your Engineering Discipline in our industry. 

Business Familiarisation will also help you to understand the rail industry, showing the interfaces between disciplines and some of the wider non-engineering functions in Network Rail always building a clear picture of how to put our passengers first.

During the Business Familiarisation phase, we will work with you to select one of the five pathways we offer and after this point all of your training and placements will be in that discipline area for the remaining 18 months.

Discipline choices are:

  • Civils (civil engineering graduates only)
  • Track (civil or mechanical engineering graduate only)

Entry requirements

Minimum of a 2:2 in an Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredited degree

What professional qualifications could you gain?

Significant evidence towards incorporated (IEng) or chartered (CEng) engineer status, accredited by the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC)

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Previous graduates have gone on to roles such as assistant project engineer, asset protection engineer or assistant design engineer. There are also plenty of opportunities for promotion to senior management positions across the organisation.

Training and development opportunities on scheme:

  • 4 technical training modules, this will start with an overview modules giving an insight into our Engineering disciplines and how they relate and moving to discipline specific training concentrating on a specific discipline and increasing in depth of knowledge
  • You will also receive a number of leadership modules developing the softer skills required to start to establish a successful leadership brand
  • Four workplace experiential learning placements. The main objective of this combination is to develop professionally registered engineers at IENG and CENG.

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Previous graduates have gone on to achieve internal promotion and become assistant project engineers, assistant design engineers, assistant asset engineers or rail fleet support engineers. There are also plenty of opportunities for promotion to senior management positions across the organisation.
