Who you are

You’re a team player with great communication skills. You are commercially focused and will harness these skills in conjunction with your top-class negotiations skills when liaising with stakeholders. You are able to work with a variety of different stakeholders. You may also have some experience of using Oracle and Bravo systems.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll carry out rotational placements in different commercial and procurement teams within one of our route functions. You’ll have the opportunity to work on important procurement projects. You could be agreeing and evaluating contracts against tender specifications. Negotiating with suppliers including pricing, contract and payment considerations. You will learn about the complete end to end procurement process and play an active role through each stage.

2:2 in any degree subject.

What professional qualifications could you gain?

Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) Level 4 gained.

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Graduates on the contracts and procurement route usually progress to roles such as; assistant procurement manager, procurement manager or commercial manager.

Why you should choose this scheme

The scheme offers a unique insight into how a government-funded organisation works. The contracts and procurement function is responsible for sourcing and purchasing all goods, works and services for Network Rail. You’ll learn how to source, procure and deliver to internal and external customers across England, Scotland and Wales. Network Rail has a wide variety of opportunities for graduates and they all have offer varied challenges and opportunities to develop different skill sets. On the Contracts & Procurement scheme you’ll work on a wide variety of projects since starting, ranging from sourcing welfare facilities for wagons to working with suppliers post-contract.

You’ll be able to tailor your placements based on your interests and search for your own opportunities. Your placement based in a route will help you to gain a better understanding of how the business functions closer to the front line and what drives the business as a whole.

What does your day will consist of?

One of the great things about being on the graduate scheme is that every day is different! From engaging with stakeholders to supporting the team, there’s always something to help with. Depending on what stage of the procurement process, you could be drafting governance documents to awarding contracts to suppliers. The flexibility of different rotations across the scheme means there’s always new skills to learn and you’ll be challenged on a daily basis
