Who you are

You have an interest in the role the railway plays in economic growth of Britain and the challenge of balancing this with the needs of passengers and freight users. You’re able to think big about the future uses of the railway, whilst also having the analytical skills to interpret and explain both numerical and written information to support your conclusions. You’re able to communicate with a wide-range of stakeholders and have the potential to be a future leader of the rail industry.

How long is the scheme?

2 years

Where you’ll be based

Initially in Milton Keynes/London, but subsequent placements will be placed in Milton Keynes/London and in our regional offices across Britain.

What you’ll be doing

As part of our System Operator function, you’ll be involved in making the railway fit for future generations. You’ll undertake placements in a number of our specialisms including:

  • Strategy and Planning – looking at the development of rail strategy, either in a regional area or across the UK, to meet the needs of passenger and freight – today and in the future.
  • Capacity Planning – looking at how the national rail timetable is formed and how we can use the capacity we have on the rail network in the most efficient way.
  • Integration – looking at how new infrastructure and mega-projects are integrated with the existing mainline railway so that passenger and freight benefits can be realised.
  • Economic Analysis – looking at how to build the economic business case for rail and specific rail projects
  • Station Capacity Modelling – looking at stations across the network to predict people movement, so that capacity constraints in the design and structure of the station can be identified and improved

Entry Requirements

2:2 in any degree subject

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

As a new scheme, we’ve not got any previous graduates (yet!). We’ll support you in choosing a first specialism within System Operator, and develop you to be one of our future leaders.

Why you should choose this scheme

Over the course of the two years, you’ll be exposed to the strategic challenges facing the GB rail industry. You’ll get a network-wide view of the railway, and an understanding of the various industry-wide interfaces that Network Rail has.
