What you’ll be doing?
Our Quality, Health, Safety and Environment scheme is based in Milton Keynes, which rotates around 4 placements in the QHSE team (part of the wider STE (Safety, Technical and Engineering) directorate).
Q – Quality and assurance – ensuring Network rail meets internal and external standards to offer the best and safest service possible.
H – Health and wellbeing – protecting and improving the physical and mental wellbeing of our employees.
S - Safety – helping to keep both Passengers the Public and our Workforce safe
E – Environment and Sustainable Development - working to help to minimise the negative effects the railway has on the planet along with increasing the sustainability of the industry for the future.
As part of the rotations for 2019 / 2020 time was spent in the Southern Region working on specific Route/Quality Improvement projects and it is envisaged that this becomes part of the QHSE scheme moving forward.
You could be developing improved level crossing management arrangements, identifying new solutions to workforce safety risks, or helping the business to understand legal requirements and compliance.
You’re likely to be involved in analysing data, prioritising risks, finding creative solutions and working collaboratively with managers, employees and trades unions. You’ll spend time working in the Environmental and Sustainable Development team and supporting NR to ensure it takes care of the environment and fulfils its social responsibilities.
You’ll also take part in site visits to observe, monitor and evaluate safety, using the knowledge gained to influence behaviours and practices. You’ll be working to be the technical authority on your subject, sharing your expertise to support your business unit. There will be the opportunity to gain relevant experience by working with departments which span across the wider industry such as the ORR (Office of Rail and Road, DFT (Department for Transport) and RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Bureau)
You may choose to support Career Fairs, go aboard the New Measurement Trains, take part in a High-Output night shift, see NR managed stations from the inside, visit a signal box, have a train cab experience or take time to understand capacity planning/timetabling.
A minimum 2:2 degree in preferably either a health and safety or an environment/sustainability related discipline.
What professional qualifications could you gain?
Graduate membership of the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (CMIOSH), leading to Chartered status once qualified Member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (MIEMA)
NEBOSH - potential to gain a significant safety qualification and accreditation.
What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?
Previous graduates have gone on to attain roles such as Project Managers, Workforce Safety Specialists and Seasons Delivery Specialists. The Career path can be varied as many roles in NR, based centrally at Milton Keynes or in any of the national regions, value QHSE experience.
