Develop a career in Private Banking, by joining an exciting graduate programme focused on relationship management, investments and specialist advice.

There are three programmes available - Relationship Management with Coutts, Relationship Management with Adam & Co, and our Coutts Asset Management programme.

From banking and lending to investment management and specialist advice we deal with the requirements of varied and notable clients. We understand the intricacies of international and high net worth individuals, and support their ambitions during the breadth of their journey with us.

About the programmes

On the Adam & Company two year programme or Coutts programme which is up to three years, you’ll deepen your understanding of private banking. By building your product knowledge and commercial awareness, you’ll be able to deliver first class solutions for clients. You’ll provide high net worth clients with relationship support and understand their challenges. You’ll also establish a network that’ll help you make an excellent start to your career as a Private Banker, Wealth Manager or Specialist.

Whichever brand within Private Banking you join, as a graduate trainee you’ll be able to establish a network that’ll help you make an excellent start to your career. We’ll equip you with the skills to be able to deliver first class solutions for our clients. You’ll provide high net worth clients with relationship support and understand their challenges.

On our Coutts Asset Management programme, you’ll get to know the Asset Management industry inside and out, including portfolio management, Fund Research, Investment Product, Investment Strategy, Investment Research and construction.

We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.

Depending on the programme you join, you’ll develop the skills that could lead you into roles including, but not limited to:

Supporting you

We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community our graduates have shaped.

Before you start, we’ll pair you with a ‘buddy’ (a graduate already on the programme) who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.

You’ll also be assigned a line manager and a mentor. They’ll be there to provide support for the duration of the programme, as well as working with you to create a personal development Plan. They’ll provide advice on your rotations, help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

Graduate Professional development 

Onboarding

If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.

Banking, RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond by building your knowledge. It’s training that all our graduates take part in and it’ll help you understand how our entire business operates.

The training focuses on:

  • How our business is structured
  • Who our customers are
  • How we manage risk
  • How we’re innovating and the external business climate
  • Networking with other business areas
  • Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation

The training is delivered in lots of different ways, including:

  • Live virtual sessions using our internal social network, Workplace
  • Workshops with our Entrepreneurial Development Academy
  • Simulations
  • Shadowing colleagues
  • Sessions with mentors

We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other and how we drive successful customer outcomes.

Induction

You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.

Rotations 

After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. You’ll be assigned a line manager and team in your area of Private Banking, and will be immersed in their work.

For the remaining rotations we’ll identify placements that allow you to develop your skillset.

The scale and diversity of our private banks means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotations is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.

Qualifications

As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.

From the moment you begin your first placement, you’ll be working towards a recognised qualification, which you’ll complete depending on your area of specialism. These can include the CeMAP, CISI Investment Advice Diploma (IAD), PCIAM, Chartered Banker Certificate or CFA.

Community project

During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.

You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!

About you

To be considered for this graduate scheme, you’ll need to have, or be on course to achieving a 2:1.

We’re looking for individuals who can adapt well to a rapidly changing business environment, who have an innovative streak, and a strong work ethic.

You’ll be someone with well honed communication skills, and a critical thinker to whom problem solving comes naturally.

You’ll also be an excellent team-worker, able to use your relationship management skills to support others and build credible connections based on trust and understanding the needs of your customers.
