Work at the heart of our business, ensuring complex and safety-critical products are safe and fit for purpose. Working at all stages of the product lifecycle, from identifying and evaluating hazards, to developing robust controls and safety procedures, you’ll play a pivotal role in development, production and testing, as well as helping us to develop comprehensive safety management systems for entire platforms.
As a Product Safety Engineer you will be working in a team containing some of the country’s foremost experts in the field of Safety Engineering and working on one of the most complex and high profile Safety Cases in the United Kingdom. You will be embarking upon a career which is stimulating and motivational, a career which will equip you with highly sought after expertise and a career which is ample with opportunities.
Follow your passion with the following responsibilities:
A Product Safety Engineer can expect to be involved in activities regarding Safety Case architecture as well as detailed Safety Inspection of the engineering design using tools such as Hazard Identification, Fault Tree Analysis, Functional Hazard Analysis, Event Tree Analysis and many others.
The role of a Safety Engineer requires a unique mind-set in which the question to be answered is not how does it work, but how does it fail. To do this you will acquire an in depth understanding of the engineering design. This is a role which requires relentless effort in which subjective questions must be answered with a compelling argument supported by a body of evidence. Questions such as how can this piece of equipment or function fail, what would happen if it were to fail, what would be the consequence of its failure, how often will it fail, what safety measures are in place in the event of its failure, how often will the failure result in an accident, what is the risk associated with this failure, is the risk acceptable, has the risk been reduced to As Low As Reasonably Practicable. The role will require you to work across a multi-disciplinary team and as such you must be a confident communicator who can facilitate policy and process confidently.
As a minimum requirement you’ll need to have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a 2.2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in one of the following engineering areas: Product Safety, Systems Engineering (particular exp. In Model Based Systems Engineering) Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Naval Architecture or another appropriate engineering discipline. Applicants should note that they will be required to register with an appropriate engineering professional body.
