Gatehouse Chambers specialises in CDR, construction & engineering, insolvency & restructuring, insurance & reinsurance, private client, property, professional liability as well as clinical negligence & personal injury work. We are an ambitious and successful set with a reputation for our business-focus, an excellent practice team and innovative marketing. Our members are consistently recognised in Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 for their legal expertise and client skills.

Who Should Apply?

We are looking for candidates of the highest calibre with the potential to become successful barristers. Our selection process looks for applicants who (i) show a genuine interest in our areas of work; (ii) show clarity and precision in their legal analysis; (iii) demonstrate written and oral advocacy skills; and, (iv) have life skills. You will need to be confident and able to work both on your own and with others, demonstrating not only analytical ability but also commercial good sense.

Gatehouse Chamber’s Pupillage Programme

Our policy is to offer pupillage to those candidates whom we consider have the potential to become tenants with us. In the last 5 years 90% of people completing pupillage have joined as tenants. We put a great deal of effort into providing you with the support and training necessary to succeed in an extremely demanding career. From day one you will be part of our team, included in Chambers’ events and introduced to clients. We actively promote an open-door policy, so that anyone feels able to approach a member of Chambers for guidance and advice, not just during pupillage but as they build their career.

We offer up to two 12-month pupillages each year, which are split into three periods of four months. During each period, you will be assigned a supervisor and other members of Chambers with whom you will work. You will share the daily professional life of your supervisor, producing pleadings and opinions on their cases, attending conferences and receiving regular feedback. Advocacy is a key component of a Gatehouse Chambers pupillage. We will provide you with in-house advocacy training supervised by our members, many of whom are advocacy trainers at the Inns and/or part-time judges. During your second six months, you can expect to find yourself in court two to three days a week.
