About the programme
The aim of this two year programme is to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading risk management professional.
It’s crucial that we understand the risks we face and manage them responsibly. As a graduate trainee you’ll learn how we do this through our three lines of defence model, and gain experience in areas like credit and operational risk, stress testing and compliance. You’ll be putting our core values into practice, and working with others to shape a robust and proactive culture of risk management.
We’ll reward you with a starting salary of £31,850. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.
After a full induction, there’ll be various rotations, each based in different areas of Risk. Throughout, the focus will be on promoting the spirit of challenge and intellectual curiosity, which’ll be crucial to your development as a future risk management expert.
Over the course of the programme, you can look forward to:
- Helping us shape risk appetites and policies right across our business
- Building your understanding of how to identify, analyse and report on risk
- Delving into the world of credit risk and financial modelling
- Supporting on change and restructure projects
- Building excellent advisory and stakeholder management skills
- Developing the confidence and influencing skills to raise ideas and challenge the status quo
- Working towards a professional qualification, such as FRM, CFA, Chartered Banker, or ICA
At the end of the two years, we hope to see you join us in a permanent role. We’ll be supporting your career development throughout, but particularly during your last rotation we’ll focus on what roles you could step into next.
This programme would be excellent preparation for a whole range of career paths, and some of the possible next roles to move into would include:

- Operational Risk Manager
- Credit Risk Analyst
- Financial Models Analyst
We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community our graduates have shaped themselves.
Before you start, we’ll pair you with a ‘buddy’ who’ll be a graduate already on the programme, and who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.
We’ll also assign you a Graduate Coach and a Placement Manager. Your Graduate Coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal development plan. Your Placement Manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

Graduate Professional development
If we offer you a role, one of the first things we’ll do is invite you to join our onboarding portal for successful graduates. It’s a great way for us to communicate key messages and to make sure you’re all ready for your first day. We’ll pair you up with your buddy who’ll be able to answer your questions before starting and who’ll help you settle in. We’ll also introduce you to your line manager before you start too, because we want to make sure you hit the ground running.
Banking, RBS is a programme we’ve designed to help you get ready for day one and beyond by building your knowledge. It’s training that all our graduates take part in and it’ll help you understand how our entire business operates.
The training focuses on:
- How our business is structured
- Who our customers are
- How we manage risk
- How we’re innovating and the external business climate
- Networking with other business areas
- Seeing the front to back and back to front of our whole operation
The training is delivered in lots of different ways, including:
- Live virtual sessions using our internal social network, Workplace
- Workshops with our Entrepreneurial Development Academy
- Shadowing colleagues
- Sessions with mentors
We start your training before your first day where you’ll complete some short, bite sized activities that we’ll then build on when you join. After you start, you’ll have the chance to take part in a series of learning activities to improve your understanding of our whole business, how we’re connected with each other and how we drive successful customer outcomes.
You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.
After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. We’ll assign you a business area, placement manager and team in our Risk function, and you’ll be immersed in their work for six months.
The subsequent rotations will depend on your motivations, skills development needs and the business’s opportunities.
The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options. The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.
As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need. You’ll also work towards a Chartered Banker qualification.
During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support its work.
You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!
You’ll need to be on course for, or already have achieved, a 2:1 in your degree.
We’re a varied function, and you don’t need to be studying a particular subject to succeed here. But we’ll be looking out for people who can demonstrate:
- An inquisitive and independent mind set, with the desire to bring new ideas forward
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills
- The ability to build great working relationships and give professional challenge
- A meticulous eye for detail and a good sense of judgement
- The ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges
