What does our international assignment services tax team do?

Tax is a fact of life – it’s deducted from our wages, added to things we buy, paid by companies and rarely out of the news headlines these days. But a career in tax isn’t just about numbers. It’s about working with people and businesses to make sure tax doesn’t become an obstacle to their long-term goals. In fact, a career in tax is heavily dependent on your ability to interpret information, research a topic and to form your own opinion on the appropriate treatment. Articulating your opinion and forming an argument are skills that will be used every day in a career in tax.

On a day-to-day basis, our team helps organisations and individuals comply with the shifting requirements of the tax authorities and pay the right amount of tax at the right time. Our international assignment services (IAS) team, who are part of the employer solutions tax team, assist overseas organisations when seconding employees to the UK, as well as those UK companies who assign employees abroad. IAS help plan every aspect of the assignment alongside our international colleagues and manage the project throughout its duration. Our graduates also have the opportunity to visit client sites and develop great relationships with clients. We help shape business strategies, so organisations can legally reduce the amount of tax they pay, and help individuals with a range of issues, including tax reliefs, planning for the future and business structuring.

What can you expect?

Our programme will give you a solid foundation in a broad range of tax issues. With us, you’ll be involved in projects from day one – anything from liaising with clients to preparing and completing tax returns for HMRC. The variety of work we do and the range of clients we work with mean you’ll have plenty of opportunity to discover a career path that fits your interests and long-term goals. With our support you’ll have the space to grow professionally so you can confidently take on ever-more challenging tasks. At RSM, you’ll gain hands-on experience, have access to on-the-job mentoring and train towards a professional tax qualification. Through our expert training programmes, you will work towards the CTA qualification either through the Tax Pathway route (ATT/CTA) or the Joint Programme route (ACA/CTA). We will choose which route through to qualification is the best for you as an individual and maximises your potential. Alongside your technical training, you will attend internal developmental training courses to ensure you have the professional and personal skills to become a trusted Chartered Tax Advisor. As you come towards the end of your studies, you’ll have a deep understanding of employer solutions tax and international assignment services. This will be reflected in the complexity of your client portfolio and your responsibilities, including mentoring more junior members of the team.

What we look for

Tax is a technically demanding discipline, so we look for graduates who are always up for a challenge and are quick to grasp new subjects. While you don’t have to be a maths genius, you will need to be comfortable with numbers. At RSM, you’ll be helping a big range of clients - from wealthy individuals to major multinationals - so it’s important that you’re adaptable. You’ll often need to explain complex technical information during client meetings and in written reports, so we’re looking for graduates with excellent verbal and written communication skills. We also look for team players who enjoy interacting with others and are curious about how businesses work. If that sounds like you, we know you’ll enjoy being part of our team.

Minimum Qualifications

Entry requirements

At RSM, we don't just look for good exam results. We think passion, personality and originality are just as important. You will need:

  • 112 UCAS (new tariff) across 3 A Levels or 104 (new tariff) across 4 Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers
  • A predicted/obtained honours degree.

UCAS changed their points system so under the old tariff it would be 280 or 260 points respectively.
