Placement Opportunity – Technology and Innovation Researchers needed!

What will I be doing?

The scope of potential work is broad and will be tailored to the skills of the successful applicants, but the types of activities will include:

  • Horizon Scanning: Identify future threats and opportunities for the rail industry and monitor cutting edge developments in technology which could be used by rail. Stay abreast of new research, critically evaluate developments, and engage with industry stakeholders to communicate your findings. We have recently [RW1] researched quantum computers, drones, programmable magnets, driverless cars, and more.
  • Knowledge searches: Hone your analytical senses and business writing skills to answer questions from members of industry on diverse topics such as: adhesion, trespass, and passenger behaviour. This is desk-based research, which relies on your ability to amass information from public sources and read between the lines to find the answers to pressing questions.
  • Assisting the research and development department of RSSB: support and engage with industry groups, help scope and cost new research projects to be carried out in the rail industry, provide research support on key industry projects such as improving sustainability, operational performance, adhesion profiles, on the UK rail network.

About you

You are an undergraduate or post graduate student in economics, sustainability, maths, physics, data science or engineering seeking to take an industrial gap year as part of your higher education. You must be registered as a student during the placement and have the legal right work in the UK. We don’t need experts in any particular field, but you should have good analytical skills, an interest in technology, organisational skills, and strong written English.. We are seeking to fill several positions.
