The Slaughter and May way
Great things in business are never done by one person. They’re done by a team of great people. And we’re always doing great things.
Slaughter and May is a leading international company, recognised throughout the business community for its exceptional legal service, commercial awareness and commitment to clients. With more FTSE 100 clients than any other law firm, as well as over 100 companies in the Fortune 500, our impressive and diverse client roster ranges from conglomerates and governments to retails giants and Premiership football clubs. The Slaughter and May name is synonymous with quality because we provide those clients with a professional service of the very highest calibre by combining the technical excellence of our people with advanced legal technology and a unique sense of perspective derived from our 132 year history.
Whilst our lawyers may be the face of the firm in the global marketplace, behind them sit a range of highly talented individuals who make up our Business Services function. Our Business Development department is a key part of our success story, so we are delighted to announce an unprecedented opportunity for talented individuals to join our Business Development department as part of an exciting new graduate scheme in September 2021.
The Business Development Academy is a trailblazing two year programme, designed to give participants a thorough understanding of business development and experience across a range of marketing-related disciplines. The programme is supported by a comprehensive range of coaching and training, all designed to support your professional development on your journey to becoming a well-rounded marketing professional with a broad business skillset.
By starting your career with us, you'll work with some of the most astute practitioners in the industry, who will stimulate your mind and continuously challenge you to be the very best you can be.
How it works
During the two-year programme, you’ll undertake a total of four rotations of six months’ duration each, sitting within our distinct marketing and business development specialisms. These could be within:
- digital marketing
- communications and PR
- research & insight
- global client development
Each rotation will see you learning the key skills unique to that discipline, as well as honing your commercial acumen and developing a range of more general skills essential in today’s business environment.
Your day-to-day work will be supplemented by our dedicated Learning and Development team, who’ll deliver a range of core technical and business training modules and workshops. We’ll give you access to coaching and elective business skills courses and talks, which are scheduled regularly throughout the year.
What we look for
In order to qualify for the 2021 Academy, you’ll need to be a graduate or final year university student, although we don’t mind what course you’ve chosen.
In the same vein, because we aim to employ the brightest minds regardless of what or where they have studied, things like background, race, colour, ethnic and national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, religious beliefs and age are all irrelevant to our application process.
In fact, the process couldn’t be simpler; you don’t have to do much more than answering two thought-provoking questions, and provide us with your contact details (so we can get in touch to let you know whether you’re successful in progressing). We’ll also ask you to complete a voluntary diversity and equality questionnaire, because we truly believe that with diversity comes strength. Who you know and how you got where you are don’t matter to us – we’re looking to hire people who can demonstrate a passion for marketing and business development, along with a genuine enthusiasm to join our team, a creative and analytical mind and the confidence to bring their individuality and talent to our offering.
If you want to be a part of our success, it’s likely you’ll share the team’s values too. Do these words resonate with you?
I’m interested in the world in which Slaughter and May operates. This allows me to think dynamically and challenge the status quo.
I’m committed and strive to overcome challenges. This allows me to get the job done well.
‘Above and beyond’
I do not accept “just good enough” because it is the easiest solution, but always strive for the best possible outcome. This allows me to exceed expectations.
I take ownership of challenges and projects and lead from the front. I’m not afraid to do what is right. I’m prepared to give and accept recognition. This allows me to learn from my mistakes.
I’m self-aware and honest with my colleagues. I communicate clearly, effectively and concisely. I can relate to those around me. This allows me to keep my sense of humour.
