Edinburgh and Lothian
Cutting edge technology at the heart of our business.
Based in the heart of Edinburgh, Baillie Gifford provides investment management services for a wide range of clients globally. We have over 1,400 employees and in excess of £352 billion funds under management. And whilst we’ve been around for more than a century, we’re a firm that’s always looking forward.
Our Information Systems teams underpin everything we do. As the largest department in the firm, we continually push to find better, more effective solutions for every business need. And as a result, we have often been early adopters of new technologies, and were one of the first UK companies to implement virtualisation and VOIP services. Today, we continue this forward-thinking approach by closely following technical trends, creating innovative teams like our AI Research function, and using the best Cloud and DevOps solutions available.
Structured, in-depth training.
This two-year rotational programme is designed to give you an understanding of the department as a whole, the different teams that operate within it, and the range of technologies we use. There are two streams to select from – Software Development and Infrastructure. Whichever specialism you choose, you’ll join us in a permanent role from day one and receive the necessary training to broaden your skills and discover your future potential.
The programme begins with a comprehensive three-month induction. We’ll introduce you to our programming languages, databases and cloud technologies, as well as our DevOps processes. You’ll also receive an overview of the investment management industry and ongoing support to gain the Investment Operations Certificate Qualification (IOC). Following the induction, you’ll form a team with the other trainees to deliver your first live project for the business.
After completing the project, you’ll begin a series of 3-4 month placements, each in a different Information Systems team. If you apply for the Software Development Stream, you’ll gain experience in full stack development, working with technologies like ASP.NET Core, as well as HTML 5 platforms, Angular, iOS Mobile Development and Android. On our Infrastructure Stream, you’ll help to maintain the firm’s IT, conferencing and telecommunications suite, whilst exploring how emerging technologies can shape the future of the business. It’s an opportunity to get hands-on with technology from leading vendors, like Dell EMC, Cisco, Splunk, Palo Alto and Bloomberg.
The programme is also underpinned by a structured framework of professional skills training, including presentations, report writing and effective meeting techniques. And your development won’t stop there, as throughout the programme and beyond you’ll have constant opportunities to learn and progress through webinars and conferences.
The most important attribute you’ll need to thrive in this role is a passion for technology. However, your degree can be in any subject with a minimum 2:1 grade. We’re more interested in whether you’ve built a website, written a blog or contributed to technical forums. For our Software Development Stream, knowledge of a programming language will give you a head start, but it’s not essential.
When we meet, we’ll ask you about your interest in emerging technology and problem-solving approach to technical challenges. We want you to share your thoughts with us on how technology can transform businesses and make them work better. Tell us about your strengths and experiences too. Perhaps you’ve had a relevant evening job or a student society role? Help us see how you’ll fit into our team.
Yes, you’ll need technical bias, but we’re really looking for more than that. We want you to have the curiosity to ask questions and explore new ideas. You must be keen to contribute to our team environment and collaborate with people across our business.
A competitive salary + benefits package including £3,000 sign on bonus, 15% employer contributory pension, discretionary annual bonus and 34 days’ holiday.
