What is the Asset Planning Graduate Pathway?
Would you like the opportunity to influence and shape multi-million-pound investment decisions about the physical assets of one of the UK’s largest utility companies? As an (Asset) System Planner you will help deliver the plan for managing our infrastructure and other assets, to deliver life’s essential service. When we say ‘system’ here, we mean a series of connected assets; for example, the reservoirs, pipes, sewers, pumps and treatment works that serve a geographical community.

Thames Water are custodians of the environment, and we make sure 15 million customers receive top quality drinking water, and have their wastewater taken away each day. Our System Planner graduate pathway offers you a unique opportunity to understand our physical assets and be coached by a network of fellow System Planners to understand performance and risk, and make balanced, evidence-based recommendations on “Where is a pound best spent?” for our 5 year regulated Price Review, and longer term system investment plans.

What could you be doing on the Asset Planning pathway?
You will join our Asset Management Team, predominantly based in Reading, on a two-year career pathway to become a System Planner or analyst. Over two years, you will gain the critical experiences needed to manage risks and make investment recommendations for one (or more) of the 91 Water and 78 Wastewater systems in our region.

Working alongside and amongst a community of fellow System Planners and analysts, you will come to understand the data, computer systems, decision support tools, and risk management processes used to understand current performance of the system. You will factor in future demand, such as climate change and population growth and understand how to balance risk to make optimised investment recommendations about where best to invest.

You will also spend time with our Operational Teams, understanding how they manage and operate our water and wastewater assets, drive performance, and identify risks.

As a System Planner or Analyst, you will be:

  1. Identifying system capability (capacity, cost to operate, performance) and risks
  2. Identifying critical assets through the use of network/process models
  3. Understanding the value of assets
  4. Identifying gaps to the system achieving it’s full potential
  5. Setting out the interventions required to meet current and future performance gaps
  6. Communicating plans to stakeholders
  7. Continually monitoring and refining plans in line with our corporate and asset management strategies
  8. Understanding the value of our system interactions on local communities and our customers

In this role, you will have chance to make a real impact on people’s lives on a daily basis, gain lots of industry experience, on-the-job learning, training and development. You’ll get exposure to senior leaders, technical experts and teams on the front line. You may lead key projects or initiatives to improve our business. You could be working as the System Planner or analyst for any of the Water or Wastewater systems in our region. As such, we look for graduates who are flexible and willing to travel across our operating area; from East London, throughout the Thames Valley to Swindon.

What can you expect from the Asset Planning Pathway?
All our graduates complete a 2-year core graduate development programme, with on-the-job placements and additional training and development. Throughout, you’ll have support from managers and mentors. The programme has several elements that support you starting confidently in our business and help you develop the knowledge, skills and experience required to succeed. You’ll be joining a network of graduates already in our business and will have all the support you need from day one. We review our programme each year, with core elements including:

  • Business and personal development modules
  • Health and safety training
  • A charity business challenge
  • Time to Give volunteering days
  • Coaching
  • Mentoring and buddying opportunities

Life after the Graduate Programme
Wherever you start in our business will give you a good grounding to develop and shape your career. At the end of your two year System Planner pathway, we expect you to have gained the necessary experiences to become a System Planner or Analyst for one (or more) of our Water or Wastewater systems. You will also, have opportunity to progress into a management role, or work in one of the other areas of our exciting business.

What kind of graduate are we looking for?
We are a diverse business and are looking for self-driven graduates who are confident stepping into new environments, and whose values reflect ours:

  • Reach higher, be better
  • Take care
  • Passionate about everything we do
  • Be respectful and value everyone
  • Be proud, be blue

We’re looking for real go-getters with a hunger for knowledge and a passion to succeed. Our graduates enjoy influencing colleagues and sharing ideas and creativity. They thrive on working with others, respecting their views and valuing the diversity around them. They are humble and decent and treat others the way they’d like to be treated. They also hold great passion for the industry we work in and our future aspirations.

You’ll have a degree graded at a 2:2 or above, along with loads of energy, ideas and a determination to succeed. You’ll be analytical with an interest in risk management processes, and it would be even better if you already had some knowledge or understanding of water or wastewater treatment processes.
Graduates with STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degrees tend to be particularly well suited to our business, however we do accept applications from all degree disciplines.
