STFC - BID - Graduate Innovation Analyst

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and Engineering.

STFC is one of nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

Our graduates join us in a permanent position, starting a real job from day one. Graduates enjoy two years of formal soft skills together with technical training and development, as well as a direct route to professional accreditation. STFC graduates have the opportunity to build on their degree, taking their understanding, knowledge and skills to a new level in a dynamic, creative, collaborative culture.

STFC consists of several distinct departments which each focus on a different specialism within science, technology, innovation and support, yet work together to achieve STFC’s grand ambitions. Different departments may look for graduates with similar skills, so you should consider which role/s are most suitable to you, and apply for up to two of these.

STFC Innovation is the technology transfer department of STFC.  Working as part of the Business and Innovation Directorate, it is responsible for the commercialisation and transfer of technology from the National Laboratories to Industry.  Our facilities provide a range of research techniques using neutrons, muons, lasers and x-rays, and high performance computing and complex analysis of large data and the expertise of our engineers and scientists cover a broad range of STEM disciplines.  It is the role of the Innovation Team to work with the 1000plus National Laboratories staff to identify novel technologies and capabilities that have an application outside of a research environment.  Then to develop these as business opportunities, either as a new company or as a licence to an existing organisation.  Through technology transfer, the Innovation Department aims to deliver economic growth and societal impact as well as maximise the return on public investment.

Summary of key duties & responsibilities

As an Innovation Analyst, you will interact with the researchers and scientists within the STFC to understand their research and to determine whether there is any commercial potential.  You will research the novelty behind an invention, the potential market, and whether there are any competing technologies.  You will present commercialisation options to the Innovation team and contribute to the business case for technology exploitation.  You will have a portfolio of projects that will require both commercial and technical development and you will help secure funding to your projects to enable them to progress.  This role requires extensive communication with technical staff and all levels of personnel from across the organisation.

There will be a requirement for occasional travel to other STFC sites and stakeholders’ locations.
