STFC consists of several distinct departments which each focus on a different specialism within science, technology, innovation and support, yet work together to achieve STFC’s grand ambitions. The Project Engineering Group is part of the Applied Science Division and provides mechanical engineering and project management to a wide range of challenging projects within the experimental facilities that STFC operates and external collaborations including ISIS, Diamond Light Source, CERN, Central Laser Facility, Particle Physics Department (PPD) and RAL Space. The group delivers project management, design, manufacture, procurement, assembly, installation, integration, and commissioning of complex mechanical systems in support of these national and international scientific research projects.
Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Work with and understand the requirements of projects set by the customers
- Produce designs and concepts through the use of 2D & 3D CAD systems
- Produce FEA analyses/calculations to validate designs
- Work with Scientists to develop novel technological solutions
- Take on ownership and management of project delivery of work packages with support from more experienced colleagues
- Procure manufactured items and bought out components
- Oversee the installation and commissioning of novel scientific equipment
- Work within a Quality Management System.
Criteria to be assessed in shortlisting (S); at Interview (I) or both (S&I)
- Obtained first degree bachelors or Masters, (not doctorate) in a relevant subject in either 2018, 2019 or be due to receive it in 2020 (S)
- Expected or have achieved a 2:1 or above (S&I)
- The right to live and work in the UK (S)
- Mechanical Design using 2D and 3D CAD systems (S&I)
- Basic Understanding of Finite Element Analysis (S&I)
- Understanding of Engineering Structures and failure modes (S&I)
- Understanding of Engineering Materials (I)
- Knowledge of Heat Transfer (I)
- Very high level of drive, enthusiasm and focus on the achievement of goals (I)
- A strong ability to think creatively, to seek and accept change and continuous improvement (S&I)
- Demonstrate good written communication skills (S)
- Ability to work as an individual or as part of a collaborative team (S&I)
- Good organisational skills (I).
