The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science, technology and Engineering. STFC is one of nine organisations that have been brought together to create UK Research and Innovation (UKRI); a new organisation with a vision to ensure the UK maintains its world-leading position in research and innovation.

Each year we offer opportunities to undergraduate students to gain practical experience, working alongside technical experts at the forefront of scientific research. We offer an invaluable experience with exposure to world class science and technology, and the opportunity to develop working relationships that continue well after your placement has finished.

STFC consists of several distinct departments which each focus on a different specialism within science, technology, innovation and support, yet work together to achieve STFC’s grand ambitions. Different departments may look for placement students with similar skills, so you should consider which role/s are most suitable to you, and apply for up to two of these.

RAL Space at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is part of STFC and at the forefront of UK Space Research. We carry out an exciting range of world-class space science and technology development with significant involvement in over 210 space missions. Our 240 staff are dedicated to supporting the programmes of the STFC and the wider UK Research and Innovation Research Councils, as well as undertaking a large number of space projects for UK and overseas agencies, universities and industrial companies.

The Millimetre-wave Technology and Chilbolton Group has a world-leading reputation in the development of millimetre-wavelength (Terahertz frequency) instrumentation for ground-based, aircraft and space applications in support of astronomy and atmospheric remote sounding experiments. It also undertakes atmospheric propagation studies for telecommunication and weather monitoring purposes. The Group has a staff base of approximately 50 with very considerable expertise in component and system design and fabrication, and very extensive development facilities that also incorporate the STFC Chilbolton Observatory.

Summary of Key Duties & Responsibilities

You will be expected to work on a range of Group projects that include instrumentation development for ground-based, airborne and spaceflight experiments. This will typically necessitate working on the development of passive and active (radar) experimental instrumentation for Earth observation. Key duties will include assisting group staff with establishing related experimental set-ups, performing device and system test and measurement, assisting with system integration, and undertaking system performance data analysis. Where relevant, the student may also be called upon to assist with instrument deployment in the field.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual. The successful candidate will be expected to be responsible for accurate instrument data collection, and maintaining an excellent standard of laboratory documentation. She/he will also be expected to work in a laboratory environment and adhere to appropriate health and safety requirements.
