Scientific computing is fundamental to modern research. This broad and rapidly-advancing field involves exploiting advanced computing capabilities to understand and solve complex problems in science

The huge amounts of data generated by scientific research require advanced computing infrastructure, products and services. Scientists need these resources to interpret and manage the information they obtain during their research, and this is what the Scientific Computing Department (SCD) provides. Whether it’s creating new computational science software, helping to visualize complex scientific results, or developing the infrastructure that allows us to process huge amounts of data, SCD is driving improvements across the scientific research landscape.

We are looking for a science communication student to help promote the Scientific Computing Department to a range of audiences. You will be part of a small team that plays a major role in promoting the technology and expertise we provide in support of national and international science, through a range of channels including websites, internal newsletters, specialist and national media, conferences and exhibitions, and educational activities.

You will have a have a passion for contemporary science and technology and will enjoy using and developing your writing and presentation skills to promote our work to a wide range of audiences.

The role would suit someone with an interest in communicating contemporary science. You might be a science student wanting to switch into science communication or you might be a journalism student seeking to specialise in science.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Researching, writing and presenting our science through a range of channels
  • Managing and supporting projects to help raise SCD’s profile, both within UKRI and externally
  • Supporting  the SCD website content development
  • Developing case studies
  • Participating in public engagement and educational activities.
