Intern - Meet Jonathan, Analyst

My summer internship in the Pensions Actuarial department at LCP was a very enjoyable experience. I had no experience in the actuarial field beforehand, but I thought it would be a great opportunity to find out more!

Upon joining, I immediately settled in. Everyone I met was very welcoming, creating a friendly atmosphere. We were also provided with an introductory week of training, where we learnt about the pensions industry and the various services LCP offers its clients, as well as being introduced to the key ideas behind the work we would be doing.

The work itself was interesting and challenging. What pleasantly surprised me was that instead of shadowing someone else for eight weeks, I was given responsibility from the start to do real client work. Whilst this seemed daunting at first, I was assigned a buddy who was very approachable and always happily answered any questions I had. I was exposed to a wide range of actuarial work, from individual member calculations to whole scheme valuations. Alongside the day-to-day work, we were given a summer project to complete involving researching and presenting on a current pensions topic. All of this provided real insight into the profession and confirmed that it was the career path I wanted to pursue.

Aside from the work, there were plenty of opportunities for social events, both within my team and across the firm. During my internship I organised a pizza making party and played for the football team in the weekly 5-a-side league.

I learnt so much from my internship, developing both my personal and technical skills. I thoroughly recommend the experience to anyone interested.
