Lockheed Martin have multiple locations in the United Kingdom and each have an independent recruitment process. I applied for the Ampthill and Havant locations for the Graduate Systems Engineer position. The recruitment process entailed an online application, a telephone interview and aa day long assessment centre on site; this was the same for both locations. Fortunately I was offered both jobs and chose the Ampthill site as it offered a more structured and formal scheme.
The 2 year Graduate Scheme is structured to allow the graduate to have 4 rotations around the company, whilst also having funded time to go on multiple compulsory and optional training courses. Some training courses I have been on are: Defence Safety training, Product Assurance Training, Risk and Opportunity Management Training and more.
During my Graduate Scheme I worked on a range of programmes at various points of the life cycle including: Warrior Capability Sustainment Programme collating evidence to validate that requirements have been met, Civil Space bidding for a new contract known as PLATO, Missile Safety Service providing the UK and US government with 6DOF and other models to verify system safety, and more.
During these rotations my manager and I have worked together to ensure that I get the experience I wanted. I had the aim of navigating myself to becoming a systems and requirements engineer and have made great progress in achieving these two with the rotations I chose. The rotations have also contributed massively to accomplishing many competencies for achieving chartership.
The company is great to work for as they keep graduate development at the forefront of their scheme and ensure that they get real life experience by giving them as much responsibility as they can handle. The scheme is highly rewarding and it has set strong foundations for my career to develop on.
