I'm Ruth and I'm a graduate Civil Engineer working for Mott Macdonald. I joined the company in June 2021, a year after finishing my degree at Loughborough University. Everyone has made me feel very welcome and I'm really enjoying my time here so far.
I applied to work at Mott MacDonald for a number of reasons. Firstly, they have a good reputation for providing outstanding work to a high quality and they also work on some of the largest and most challenging infrastructure projects. Further, I heard from friends who already work at Motts that the company really strives to work towards the company's values such as creating positive environmental and social change and respecting the employees. I have found that too since joining Mott MacDonald ? employees in the company at all levels really care, and the values aren't just a far off ideal but instead something that everyone really believes in and works towards.
I work in the rail civils team at Mott MacDonald and since starting I have had the opportunity to work on a number of different projects of different scale and at different stage: from initial option selection to detailed design. I work closely with different disciplines to help coordinate all the different parts of a station that must be considered such as track, mechanical and electrical, and landscape to name a few. This has given me opportunity to meet a lot of people in a short time period and has given me a much greater understanding of what other disciplines do and how important integration and working collaboratively is.
I am part of the Accelerating Your Future programme which Mott MacDonald runs for all its graduates. The programme aims to help develop transferrable skills between all disciples such as networking and communication and has been really helpful in enabling me to meet other graduates from all over the country. I have also learnt about the company's values and how I can work with them in mind in the future to create better outcomes for clients and society in general. Mott MacDonald are supporting me towards chartership with mentoring from more senior colleagues as well as events put on by other early career professionals such as essay workshops.
The Early Career Professionals (ECP) network is another great thing about working at Motts. Events are held on a fairly regular basis such as nosy neighbours to share with each other what we have been working on, and coffee mornings with a Canadian office to create more global networks!
I really enjoy the challenges and the fast pace of work at Mott MacDonald because I know that there is so much support if I was to find something too stressful or the workload gets too much. Everyone is so helpful when you need showing how to do something and the company both say and practice the idea that a happy and diverse workforce create a much better company.
