I joined the WSP Geotech Team in Cardiff after completing my Masters in 2019. My job role includes a mix of both site and office work. My office-based work includes reporting such as desk studies, ground investigation specifications, coal mining risk assessments, geotechnical design reports and landslide remediation options reports. This involves researching sites, designing ground investigations, analysing field and laboratory data, deriving geotechnical parameters, and proposing remediation options.
I’ve travelled all over the UK for site visits. These include supervising ground investigations and site inspections / monitoring visits for landslides, earthworks and highways.
The highlight of my career so far is being able to complete my IRATA Level 1 – Rope Access Technician so that I’m able to abseil onto rock faces and landslides to undertake inspection.
Why should you join my team?
Could include points about:
- Exciting projects? In South Wales there is a coal mining legacy so we get lots of coal mining related projects, which involves coal mining risk assessments, ground investigations to find mine shafts / voids and potential remediation projects. Due to the geology of the South-West there are also a lot of landslide projects which we get to work on. This includes site inspections and designing slope remediation or monitoring programmes.
- Growth of team?
- Social activities? The Cardiff office has variety of socials throughout the year including wine tastings, rugby matches, pub quizzes, summer BBQ and Christmas parties. There are also sport teams you can join such as football and rugby or the lunchtime running club.
- Additionally, at WSP you get two volunteer days to use very year, so I’ve organised a beach clean up for the office. In the past I’ve undertaken Disaster Relief Simulation Training with RedR and remotely mapped rural parts of the world to allow relief coordination.
- Support network/opportunities to progress? You can choose if you want to get chartered through the Geological Society or ICE. WSP runs mentoring programmes for both of these.
