Ship and Offshore Structures

This programme was developed following an increase in demand for design engineers who can design and assess new ships and offshore structures. It is designed for graduate engineers or those from related disciplines who will be introduced to ultimate strength, fatigue and design concepts for structural components of ships and offshore floating systems. The programme will provide students with knowledge of material behaviour together with factors influencing the dynamic behaviour of offshore installations.

Entry requirements

BEng with First, or Second Class (Upper Division) Honours or equivalent overseas qualification.

Applicants with marginally lower qualifications will be considered for the Postgraduate Diploma in the first instance. Applicants with other qualifications will be considered on an individual basis.

Course modules

Modules: Risers and mooring lines; dynamics of floating offshore installations; reliability-based marine structural design including plated structures; finite element analysis of floating structures; advanced marine structures; computational modelling of problems in structural mechanics; materials engineering.

Assessment methods

There are two types of method for module assessment. One is course work assessment only, the other is examination assessment. For examined modules the final assessment mark consists of 30-40 per cent course work and 60-70 per cent examination.


The fees for Scottish and EU students are £5,500. For students from the rest of the UK course fees are £9,000. Course fees for international students are £18,000.
