School Direct Initial Teacher Training (salaried) with QTS

Trainees on the School Direct (salaried) programme are employed as unqualified teachers during the period of their training. Many schools are seeking to fill a vacant post at the end of the course, though there is no guarantee of employment.
Applications are made through UCAS to the Lead School. Each applicant will be considered in consultation with an LJMU admissions tutor and may be asked to attend a selection event in school.
Selection is based on performance in teaching and written tasks and interviews which may involve the school’s learners. The selection process will involve the schools’ teachers and senior leaders as well as LJMU tutors.
Normally you will need:
- a first degree of 2.2 or above (some Lead Schools will require a 2:1)
- GCSE Grade C or equivalent in English and Maths (and in a science subject for Primary programmes)
- A demonstrable interest in teaching within the curriculum area. You could show this in a number of ways – time spent in schools, knowledge of the chosen curriculum area, relevant practical experience. A minimum of 10 days’ work experience in a UK Primary or Secondary school is normally required prior to commencing the programme. We can help to arrange this for successful applicants
- three years employment experience since graduation (may be less for some subjects such as Physics or Mathematics)
Don't hold back from applying for teacher training because of your subject knowledge. You may still be able to train to teach by building up or refreshing your existing knowledge with a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) programme. So, if you want to teach a specific Secondary subject but have an insufficient level of the subject in your degree to access the course, you should consider a fully funded subject knowledge enhancement course which could help prepare you to train to teach the subject effectively.
Some offers may be conditional upon completing a subject knowledge enhancement course prior to commencing the PGCE, this will be discussed at interview.
Please note: original evidence of GCSE passes (or equivalent) and your degree (if you have already graduated) will be required at interview. For the purposes of initial teacher training, level 2 numeracy and literacy qualifications are not considered as equivalent to GCSE grade C in Mathematics or English.
You are required by the Department for Education to undertake Professional Skills Tests in Literacy and Numeracy prior to entry to this programme. Successful completion of the Professional Skills Tests will form part of the conditions of any offer of a place.
If you accept a formal offer from LJMU you will be required to meet the Department for Education’s standards for physical and mental fitness to teach and clearance to work with children. Further information, including a Declaration of Health questionnaire and details of how to apply for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure will be sent to you after you have firmly accepted an offer
Entry requirements (International)
LJMU welcomes applications from international students. In addition to normal entry requirements, you will be expected to demonstrate a very good level of English language competence, for example an IELTS score of 6.0-6.5 or equivalent. Please note: specific courses may require higher levels of English language competence.
Please note: international students entering on a Tier 4 visa cannot study part time. Students entering the UK on alternate types of visa may be in a position to study part time. Please contact LJMU’s International Admissions Team for further details before making your application.
In order to obtain a visa you will also need to show evidence that the money required to cover your tuition fees and living expenses has been in your bank account for at least 28 days prior to submitting your visa application. So please make sure that your finances are in place before applying.
This intensive, full time programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) alongside your academic award.
Although you will spend the majority of your time in school there are university-based training sessions at the IM Marsh campus. These include: a week long summer school, weekly campus sessions and a number of conference days towards the end of the course. Additional training and professional development programmes are organised in school by the Lead School.
As this is a postgraduate course, you should expect to undertake a significant amount of independent study and preparation, not only to support your course assignments, but also your school-based work. This intense programme is tightly focused on providing you with the skills and knowledge required. Tutorial support is an important part of the process and you will receive a personalised service that will enable you to set targets and achieve to your highest potential.
Your personal tutor will meet with you formally six times a year to monitor your progress, provide guidance and advice and set targets for your development.
You will also be allocated a teacher mentor who will organise and supervise your school-based training. Your mentor will be supported by an LJMU tutor who will visit your school several times during the year to monitor your progress.

For the School Direct (salaried) PGCE programme, you will study:
- Developing Reflective Professional Practice

School based training involves the preparation and delivery of learning sequences and lessons to small groups and whole classes of learners, with expectations and workload increasing during the course. This work is supported by your teacher-mentor who will support your professional learning experience in school.
The course is delivered through a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, interactive workshops, group discussion and reflection, problem solving and micro-teaching. We also make full use of BlackBoard, the University’s Virtual Learning Environment.
A variety of assessment methods are used during the course including:critical reflections on practice, literature review, small scale research projects and design and analysis of learning experiences.
During your training, you will monitor your progression towards achieving Qualified Teachers Status (QTS) and will need to maintain an appropriate professional development portfolio to support this.
A final assessment will be based on observation of your teaching practice and the evidence base that you develop during training.
School Direct (Salaried) trainees are employed by their home school and receive a salary funding their training year, based on the unqualified teacher pay scale. The employing school will be charged a tuition fee of £4,750 for their course.
Due to their employment status, trainees are NOT eligible for the same range of financial support as undergraduate students such as student loans and Bursaries.
