Manchester Metropolitan University

Law

Designed for students who want the challenges and rewards of a legal career but don't have an undergraduate degree in law, or who have significant work experience but no formal qualifications, this programme will provide you with a thorough grounding in the core legal subjects. Those who have studied a non-law degree before converting can be particularly attractive to employers as they offer additional skills and experience. Offering high levels of face-to-face teaching contact in lectures and workshops, and an open door policy for academic or pastoral advice, the environment is supportive and friendly. We also offer a Careers and Employability adviser to help you take the steps into a fulfilling legal career. There are opportunities for GDL students to take part in pro bono (voluntary) work experience in a wide range of areas.

Entry requirements

You should have an honours degree from the UK or the ROI. International students with a degree are eligible to apply as long as equivalence to a UK/ROI honours degree is demonstrated.

Course modules

Modules include: Core Units: Contract law; criminal law; equity and trusts; land law; law of the european union; law of torts; legal skills and practice; public law.

Assessment methods

You will receive informal assessment feedback from your tutors throughout the course. Your final result is based on seven end-of-year examinations, two pieces of written coursework and a moot.

Fees

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service although many students choose to buy a laptop. However, students are advised that is good practice to purchase a core text book for each of the seven compulsory modules on the GDL. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £350 for books and printing.
