Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education
We welcome educational practitioners from science, technology, engineering, mathematics and computing, from all phases of education and work place training on our STEM Masters course. The STEM Masters course will consider the development of conceptual understanding generic to all the STEM subjects, whilst developing expertise within a specialist aspect. This course will challenge students to think deeply about their own professional contexts and settings, their place and role within this, and the possibilities for development, change, and generating practice knowledge and innovations. We will engage critically with the research that informs thinking about learning and classroom practice in the STEM subjects. We will examine the place of practical experience and the use of problem solving in real life contexts in developing pedagogical approaches. Students will look at how belief systems are established and at some of the counter-intuitive ideas that learners need to confront within the STEM subjects. We will consider the importance of developing positive attitudes in learners and explore the strategies involved in the successful management of change within institutions. Course members will also consider the role of the STEM subjects in all aspects of wider society.
Applicants will normally need to hold anan honours degree or a postgraduate diploma or a professional qualification recognised as being equivalent to a UK honours degree. Other qualifications or experience may be acceptable if they demonstrate appropriate knowledge and skills to a UK honours degree standard. You also need to have experience relevant to the award area (or taking up employment or similar related to the award area).
Working within the integrated curriculum framework for the PDP, we offer the opportunity to tailor each unit to individual needs and contexts. units: mapping the territory: critical concepts and issues; specialist supported project; shaping the future; research and practice; dissertation.
Written coursework and dissertation. For taught units (30 credits) the assessment is 5000 words equivalent. The final (60 credit) dissertation is 12-14,000 words.
All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 for books and printing. Total optional cost: £400
