Education in Professional Practice

This programme suits mentors, practice educator or teachers and qualified teachers within health and social work contexts. It focuses on the development of the individual as a supporter and facilitator of learning. The programme has 3 main pathways: mentor-educator; practice teacher-educator (PgCert level); qualified teacher (PgCert and Master's levels).

Entry requirements

Year 1 entry participants will normally be expected to have graduate status. In addition, various courses may require additional entry qualifications such as professional registration and relevant career experience. Non-standard entry will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Students need to provide evidence of professional and subject qualifications relevant to the focus of their teaching role. It is anticipated that those students not possessing a Degree in higher education (HE), will be able to demonstrate equivalence. University application processes and, where necessary, interviews enable students and academic staff to assure themselves of the student's ability to progress to level 7 study. For those students who are registered nurses, midwives or specialist community practitioners wishing to record the successful completion of the award with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), they must have: an entry on the appropriate part(s) of the current NMC register; completed a minimum of 3 years full-time experience (or equivalent part-time experience) in relevant professional practice during the last 10 years; acquired additional professional knowledge that must be relevant to the intended area of teaching/practice, and at no less than 1st degree level.
A degree, or equivalent; relevant professional experience may be required; applicants who are nurses, midwives or specialist community practitioners wishing to record the successful completion of the award with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) require: an entry on the appropriate part or parts of the current NMC register; a minimum of 3 years full-time relevant professional experience (or equivalent part-time experience) acquired during last 10 years; plus additional professional knowledge relevant to the intended area of teaching or practice (at a minimum of 1st degree level); all applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 575 (paper-based), TOEFL 90 (internet-based), or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: empirical project; practice project; systematic appraisal; project feasibility study dissertation.
