Primary Education (PGCE)

The PGCE Primary Education course will allow you to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the national curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 to enable you to kick-start your career in teaching.

Accredited by Ofsted as a category A programme - the highest grading possible - This course is highly valued by employers and celebrates a 98% employment rate within six months of completion.

School based placements form a large part of the PGCE and you will complete a series of these over the course of your training.

Successful completion of the PGCE Primary Education course will provide you with Qualified Teacher Status. This allows you to immediately begin working in a school or other educational establishment.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a good honours degree (normally 2.1 or above) of an UK university or a recognised equivalent qualification.

The content of the applicant's previous education must provide the necessary foundation for work as a primary school teacher.

Applicants should have a GCSE grade C or above in Mathematics, English Language and a Science subject prior to submitting their application.

All trainee teachers are required to pass skills tests in numeracy and literacy before they can be recommended for the award of qualified teacher status (QTS). Applicants to ITT courses which start after 1 July will be required to pass the skills tests before starting their course.

Assessment methods

Your tutors will use a variety of teaching methods, which may include lectures, seminars, problem-based workshops, case discussions, practical activities, group work and tutorials. Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that will underpin your learning journey. You will have access to a Guidance Tutor with whom you can discuss any academic issues. Extensive feedback from both tutors and peers is built into the course. These methods will enable you to demonstrate that you have met the requirements to achieve PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status, aligned to the Teachers' Standards 2012.
