LLM Bar Professional Training Course
The course is designed to develop to a high standard a range of core practical skills, and to equip students to succeed in the fast changing environment of practice at the Bar; particular emphasis is placed on the skill of advocacy; advocacy sessions are conducted in groups of 6; it provides an environment in which students are encouraged to realise, through practice and feedback, their full potential.
A qualifying law degree (normally a 2.1 or above); applicants who have/are predicted a 2.2 in their qualifying law degree are considered if they can provide additional evidence of achievement e.g. awards, scholarships, work experience (paid or unpaid) in their personal statement; or a Graduate Diploma in Law or Common Professional Examination with an undergraduate degree (normally 2.1 or above); applicants whose undergraduate degree is a 2.2 are considered if they can provide additional evidence of achievement e.g. awards, scholarships, work experience (paid or unpaid) in their personal statement. Applicants whose 1st language is not English should have a minimum score of 7.5 in each section of the IELTS academic test; or a minimum score of 73 in each part of the Pearson Test of English (academic).
Modules: case preparation and analysis; legal research; civil litigation, evidence and remedies; criminal litigation, evidence and sentencing; professional ethics; advocacy; conference skills; drafting; resolution of disputes out of court; opinion writing. Applicants choose 2 from the following: advanced civil practice (judicial review); advanced criminal practice; commercial practice; employment practice; family practice; immigration; landlord and tenant.
There are 12 assessments. All students have a one to one feedback session with a tutor prior to each substantive skills assessment. Wherever possible, assessments are set in a practical context. Actors are used to provide students with a realistic experience of an examination in chief and cross examination and the questioning and advising of clients. Students also perform a chambers application before a District Judge who will interject with questions.
