English Language Teaching
This course has been designed for experienced English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teachers, also referred to as TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) who wish to enhance their professional development and career prospects. The course will include both theoretical and practical aspects of English language teaching. You'll develop your in-depth knowledge and understanding of the links between teaching, academic research and theories of language learning and teaching. This is an excellent opportunity to gain advanced training and skills for English language teaching, course design, materials development and assessment. This course has a high profile of international course participants which brings a diverse range of socio-cultural perspectives regarding teaching and learning together. We have course participants from a range of places including; China, Korea, Mexico, Libya, Switzerland and the UK. You'll be taught through active participation in group work, discussions and will exchange ideas with your peers which will develop your critical and analytical skills. Our assessment methods have been designed to evaluate how you apply theoretical concepts to practical work and where possible to relate ideas and proposals to your own teaching context. Assignments will be in a range of forms including essays, practical tasks, portfolios, demonstration lessons and class tests. Alongside your study you also have the opportunity to learn a new language. The University Language Programme (ULP) is available to all students and gives you the option of learning a totally new language or improving the skills you already have.
At the end of the academic year you'll get the exciting opportunity to be part of the Postgraduate Student Conference. You'll be able to present your English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics Research Project and gain feedback from academic staff and your peers. This course is career focused and is designed to provide a pathway into posts in academic management, teacher training or materials writing for experienced teachers. Many of our recent graduates are located across the world and are now working as English language teaching professionals, teacher trainers, textbook writers or university lecturers. If you would like to apply for this course, you'll need a UK honours degree (minimum 2:2) or an equivalent qualification. You'll also need two years' full-time English language/ TESOL experience. Applicants with five years of experience in English Language Teaching/ TESOL without a degree will be considered for this course.
This course is divided into modules, which are worth a number of credit points, and are separately taught and assessed. To get your degree you have to pass all modules, and collect 180 credit. You'll study four core modules, pick two optional modules and complete a dissertation. Analysing Language in Use: You'll develop your knowledge and skills analysing language in use. This module covers important areas in language analytics for English Language practitioners • Theory and Practice in Language Teaching: This module develops your understanding of a wide range of teaching methodologies for both general purpose teaching and for particular language elements and skills • Course Design and Assessment: The module aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to evaluate different types of course and syllabus design and how to design a course • Research Methods: This module provides essential preparation for assignments and dissertations. You'll develop research skills and apply them to methodologies required for English Language Teaching research • Dissertation: You'll write a 15,000 word piece of independent work that builds upon the practical, theoretical and research skills of the MA course. Our optional modules include: Blended Learning and CALL: Multimedia Applications in Language Learning; English for Professional Purposes; Materials Development; Teacher Education; Teaching English to Young Learners; Teaching Speaking, Listening; Teaching Reading and Writing; English for Academic Purpose and Intercultural Communication.
The majority of the marks awarded for this course are for the dissertation. Students will have an individual supervisor allocated when offered a place on the course. Dissertation tutorials will take place between the student and their nominated supervisor, who will offer advice on developing appropriate study methods and provide feedback on drafts and the students dissertation.
