The Commercial Law (LLM) programme offers you an opportunity to engage in intensive study of specialist commercial and industrial topics. You may wish to concentrate on European commercial issues, international trade or aspects of domestic commerce. It provides a solid foundation for anyone wishing to enter the legal professions, aspiring to a career in business and finance or planning to become an in-house lawyer.
Our Centre of Law and Enterprise Research Centre webpages demonstrate our breadth of critical scholarship, teaching and public engagement towards business enterprise and the dedication to progressive and innovative thinking.
We offer an exciting and stimulating set of degree programmes, each of which prepares you for a variety of careers. If you are interested in studying law beyond your undergraduate degree level and want to develop your analytical, research and legal writing skills, you will find Bristol's LLM to be a challenging and rewarding experience. We have a large and vibrant international community and our LLM students benefit from small class sizes taught by world-leading experts.
Our LLM programmes give you the opportunity to specialise in a particular area but you can also opt for a broader and more general set of unit choices. In all cases, you are encouraged to explore your chosen areas of law at a deeper level. You will have the chance to see how these legal fields operate in different contexts, considering the relevant issues theoretically and practically and from a range of perspectives.
Lots more information about the School is available on our 'Why Bristol Law School?' webpage, which includes short videos.
In the first part of the programme, you will choose four units from a list of commercial law topics, or three units from the list and a further unit from any of our other specialist LLM programmes. These units will be assessed by examinations and/or essays. In the spring term, you will choose a dissertation topic from the field of commercial law for approval by the Law School. After passing part one of the programme, you start work on your dissertation for submission by September. You must pass both parts to obtain an LLM and may not proceed to part two until you have passed part one.
