Secondary Physical Education (PGCE)

We’re recognised as one of the leading institutions in the country for teacher training. Enjoying a strong national and international reputation, we have a long and distinguished record of training teachers dating back to 1839.

Our PGCE Secondary programme, with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), offers high-quality training for those wishing to teach in the secondary age range.

The Physical Education route is designed to build on prior experience to equip all students with the specific subject knowledge and skills that will enable them to become effective teachers of Physical Education across Key Stage 3 and 4 and Post 16.

The subject study modules are based on the Bishop Otter Campus in Chichester. These are complemented by a Professional Studies programme which takes place on the Bognor Regis Campus.

Entry requirements

Typically, candidates will have an honours degree with a classification of 2.1 or above.

All candidates must have achieved at least a ‘C’ / 4 in GCSE English and Mathematics and having the equivalent qualification in science is an advantage.

Some experience of observation in school and the ability to reflect on this are highly desirable.

Successful candidates are those who are able to demonstrate a genuine interest in sport through personal performance and the coaching of young people.

It is an advantage to hold governing body coaching awards and to have experience of working in schools.
