Professional Engineering (online study)

Developed with the Engineering Council as part of the Engineering Gateway programme, this MSc Professional Engineering online degree is a highly flexible, part-time, work-based learning route to obtaining Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. It is recognised by a wide range of engineering institutes such as ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers), IMECHE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) and IET (Institute of Engineering and Technology) through the Engineering Council.

Entry requirements

You will require:

  • BSc/BEng(Hons) degree which is accredited for either IEng or as part of CEng
  • Minimum of two years’ relevant industrial or engineering experience
  • Employment within a relevant engineering role

If you don’t have a degree or an accredited degree,  we can consider your application if supported by significant industrial experience within the engineering sector.

English language qualifications

If English is not your first language you will need an English language qualification*. For this course you will need at least one of the following:

  • IELTS 6.5 (minimum of 6.0)*
  • TOEFL 580 (paper based) 237 (computer based) or 92 (internet based)
  • Pearson Test of Academic English: 58
  • Cambridge Advanced Certificate: Pass
  • London Tests of English: we accept level 5 for postgraduate courses
  • International GCE O Level English Language: Grade C
  • International GCSE English/English as a Second Language: Grade C.*

*If you have a minimum of IELTS level 4.5 you can study our Certificate of Credit in English for Academic Purposes which we will accept as evidence that you are able to perform at a suitable level of IELTS 6.0.  We will also accept the Certificate of Credit as evidence that you can perform at GCSE level.

Course modules

Certificate modules: applied research methods in engineering; negotiated advanced technical module; negotiated module (environmental and ethical responsibility). Diploma modules: continuous professional development and strategic management; negotiated module (commercial and technical leadership); negotiated module (innovation in technology); negotiated module (solving engineering problems). Master's modules: independent scholarship (technology).

Assessment methods

This course with the Engineering Council as part of the Engineering Gateways programme will help students to gain Chartered Engineer (CEng) status if they are working in the engineering profession. It is a work based route to the academic qualification and professional development that students need to demonstrate for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Students will be able to acquire professional competencies and an MSc without taking time off work. Because the course is flexible, it can be adapted to almost any work situation, engineering industry, or location.
